UDUB MPs Tabled a Motion To Amend House Rules

HARGEISA, Somaliland (Somaliland Globe)- Twenty nine MPs from Somaliland’s ruling party have submitted a parliamentary motion to the Speaker of the lower House today to amend the House Rules so that MPs can have the opportunity to remove the Speaker by simple majority.

Under the current Rules of the House, to remove the Speaker requires 2/3 of the votes of the total membership of the House.

The debate on impeachment proceedings against the president was expected to dominate today’s parliamentary sitting however the House business committee that decides the parliamentary agenda allowed, as a compromise, the motion submitted by UDUB MPs to top the agenda. Meanwhile, the debate on Rayale’s impeachment has been deferred till the next parliament sitting due to time constraints.

The Somali parliament is dominated by the opposition and the government has practically no chance to amend the Rules of the House and will never be able to get the number of votes required to remove the Speaker.

There was a heavy police presence at parliament building and its surroundings for the third time since the opposition initiated impeachment efforts against the president.
