Somalia: al Shabaab responsible for slaying 4 teachers

 

BELETWEIN, Somalia Apr 14 (Garowe Online) - An Islamist guerrilla group in Somalia is responsible for the brutal slaying of four school instructors after fighters briefly seized a key town without bloodshed.

 

A spokesman for al Shabaab fighters, Muktar Robow "Abu Mansur," did not distance his armed group from killing the four civilians in Beletwein, a provincial capital near the Ethiopian border.

 

"Our fighters did not intentionally kill the teachers," Abu Mansur told the AP.

 

Al Shabaab guerrillas captured Beletwein after Hiran Governor Yusuf Daboged and regional security forces withdrew from the town Sunday night, locals said.

 

The governor was last reported to have safely reached the border village of Feer Feer, a key base for Ethiopian troops deployed in Somalia's central regions.

 

In Beletwein, the Islamist guerrillas seized control of all government buildings and burned the home of Governor Daboged, before withdrawing voluntarily.

 

The four teachers - two Kenyans and two British citizens of Somali origin - were killed outside of a private, English-language school.

 

But the al Shabaab spokesman was eager to distance his militant group from flyers spread throughout markets in the capital Mogadishu, threatening traders to lower the exchange rate or face death.

 

Abu Mansur said that al Shabaab is not responsible for those flyers, adding: "Soon, we will take steps against those groups [who spread the flyers]," he told Mogadishu-based radio stations Monday.

 

He blamed the governments of Somalia and Ethiopia for hyperinflation, which has severely devalued the Somali Shilling and contributed to rising market prices for common goods.

 

According to Abu Mansur, the Ethiopian government wants to eradicate the Somali Shilling and replace the country's currency with the Ethiopian birr.

 

Somalia has lacked an effective national government since 1991, when warlords overthrew a military dictator and plunged the country into civil conflict.

 

In December 2006, Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia to install the interim government in Mogadishu after dislodging Islamists from power.

 

The Islamists have regrouped and are responsible for guerrilla attacks against the government and its Ethiopian backers, leading to a protracted conflict that has severely handicapped the Somali transitional government.

First you can’t brutality slain civilians and then say your fighters did not intentionally kill the teachers. These types of act keep us from moving forward as a country. However, we can’t forget that this is a war. In such environment, the presence of casualties will always be constant. This is once again why dialogue is where true victory lies.

The Habashi's once hegemonic power was marginalized that they lead today the main opposition group, the Coalition of Unity and Democracy (UCID) in Ethiopia who does not permit the decentralization of Ethiopia into federal states.

 

Anyway the Ethiopian factor into this conflict does not explain a lot why we are in this mess. Even your self-righteous spectacle may understand the subtleties of the source of this current situation. In other words, you would be forced to elucidate objectively as contradictory how did Ethiopian come into the aid of RRA in Baidabo, an occupied town by the same group. It will give you the crystal ball.

 

I have said it before that we are in this mess for several reasons.

 

The deep south, the most fertile part of Somalia, has been in captivity to a group of allied clans from central Somalia and who benefited from the lack of Somalia's government:

 

1. Financing warlords with money intended for relief and development and coming to each others' aid.

 

2. Suppressing and driving out the indigenous groups from their homes and farms.

 

3. Contracting with foreign companies (eg. Abdiqasim has at many times contracted with several companies and he was main guy behind the creation of the Islamist-garbed warlords)

 

4. Employing the divide and rule tactics in many parts of Somalia. (For instance, Puntland, Jama vs Yusuf. Kismayo, the traditional settlers vs JVA-a coalition of unrelated clans)

 

5. The so called Al-Itihaad-turned-courts, remained powerful and influential in Mogaidisho over the years, but they have never attempted to challenge Qanyare , Caato , Suudi, Raage and their likes, until these latter guys intruded into their turfs and challenged to oust them of their strongholds, basically trying to hoodwink the CIA agents and their money. You might have already known that CIA goes after and implements her country's blueprint of secrecy pursuing terrorist guys linked to the two US embassies in Nairobi while in reality not seeming to understand the complexity of Somalia's root problem: Clan Hegemony and Land expansion over the richest regions of Somalia.

 

Since TFG, things have dramatically changed. Many clans under brutal captivity feel today joyous and liberated. They tasted for the first time since 1991 what is like to be masters of their own affairs, being mayors, governors, legitimate representatives of their own territories. Believe me, there are so many unheard of clans that are so numerous in these regions, more numerous than the whole population of Northern Somalia, according to reliable stats and studies by International NGOs.
