I agree completely. Teaching Islam in Somalia a generation or two ago "might" have been ok. Because back then Islam was mostly benign and depoliticized and its teachers and proselytizers were humane, gentle and generally decent people.

 

That's all gone nowadays. Modern "tabliiqs" spread virulent, politicized and hateful form of Islam that's alien to Somalia. These born again muslims are constantly angry (at everything and everyone), dour and impersonal. This version of Islam they spread goes by various names, among them include: Talibanism, Wahabism, Islamic extremism and what have you. It was alien to Somalia and Somalis just 5-10 years ago. But not any more.

 

We now regularly hear of Somalis being arrested for "Islamic" terrorism and blowing themselves up in suicide operations in the cause of Allah. Now, since we know these ideas are not native to Somalia, then they must have come from abroad. There is two avenues for this message to reach Somalis. One, Somali foot soldiers learn these pernicious ideas from abroad and bring them to Somalis. Second, foreigners themselves come to spread them in Somalia.

 

Do not be fool yourselves into believing those shiikhs came to Somalia to teach alif ba ta... they probably came to preach martyrdom and Jihad, i.e. terrorism.

Five Pakistani preachers killed in Somalia

 

 

Gunmen shot dead five Pakistani preachers Wednesday outside a mosque in the central Somalia, local religious and police officials said.

 

A police official said the preachers were dragged out of the mosque in the town of Galkayo, in the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, and killed a short distance away.

 

"The five were from Pakistan. All the roads in the area have been sealed off and we are looking for the killers," the official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

 

Sheikh Mohamed Abdi Said, a spokesman of the pro-government Ahlu Sunna religious movement that controls the area, condemned the killings, saying they were "contrary to the teaching of Islam and all customary laws".

 

It was unclear why the five were targeted. Puntland is relatively peaceful and has been spared much of the violence which has wracked the Horn of Africa state since 1991.

 

The incident occurred in Galkayo, a town on the border between the breakaway region and Somalia proper, a region where the Ahlu Sunna group dominates.

 

The movement in December declared a holy war against the radical Shebab militia that controls much of southern and central Somalia, accusing them of fostering violence in the war-wracked country.

 

The Al Qaeda-inspired Shebab is currently engaged in a deadly military offensive against the internationally-back ed government of President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.
