macalimuu Posted November 26, 2004 What most optimistic Somalis refer to as the most important chapter of the peace process is now in progress, the disarmament and demobilization of the dominant Mogadishu factions. All Mogadishu factions, the warlords and their militias say they are ready to disarm and work with the newgovernment. The good news coming from Mogadishu is that groups of business people and civil society are already working on disarming militias and rehabilitating them. One such group is Elman. Hiiraan.com However a large number of these militiamen are also organizing themselves to gain some incentives financially. They are planning to demand a $500 USD for each combatant and there are about 60,000 of them. They want this payment to continue for at least 6 months. Some speculate that money will not be an issue if it will facilitate the removal of these combatants off the streets. There are also programs to make Mogadishu a gun-free city... Let us all encourage these admirable progressive and ingenious doctors, teachers, elders, youth and women’s organizations members who at the forefront of the struggle to pacify the city.
