WHY IN GODS NAME ARE WE EVEN THINKING OF SUPPORTING WAR CRIMINALS IN SOMALIA

Recommended Posts

Does the past not bother us or are we blind to what is going on under our very noses? Do we have any conscience or just as heartless as the very leaders that are causing more turmoil amongst the brothers and sisters that should have taken arms and united against all the "baddies". Now why cant we just get rid of all these dinosaurs and try to insert new blood in the political sphere where we are hell bent on fighting over the same war criminals that have murdered, plundered and totally looted the beautiful country that was once Jewel of Africa.

Does the proverb “A leopard never changes its spots mean anything to anyone?

To other communities supporting war criminals is unthinkable.

As the saying goes..

"A wise man is cautious and turns away from evil, but a fool throws off restraint and is careless."

I have nooo idea why. The only way I think well move forward as a nation is if the country as a whole trusts their government. Now if some people sees their president or government officals as war mongers or killers their not going to have any reason WHAT SO EVER to trust and support their government.

I personally think anyone whose a warlord or whose shed any blood should not run our country..and thats my word

Look, essentially, what we dealing with here is a bunch of war/druglords (killers) and the battle between them for control of Somalia. Obviously, the most ruthless of them all will triumph. I just pity for the innocent souls caught in the crossfire!

WHY IN GODS NAME ARE WE EVEN THINKING OF SUPPORTING WAR CRIMINALS IN SOMALIA

You need to understand why some individuals support such criminals and why others don't speak out against them!! It is very difficult to encourage people to speak out against some warlords when we approach them with language that appears to be hostile to them or worse when some here support their own warlord bassed on pure clanish reasons. That what Jumatatu said clearly " my defence for the warlords of Mogadishu will stand as long as we have stooges in here who tend to give Yeey the status of 'Mother Teresa'" So here he is defending his warlords bassed " you do same"!.

That is the situation most of the people here!If you want to help people to criticize one or another criminal , we need to see bothsides , NOT only we are allowed to criticise one warlord while we turn blind eyes on another whatever reason behind!.I think any idea of spreading "Anti warlords" will be rejected or ignored by many here! Honestly, I would say Honesty is the key here!.

What I see here is not discussion forum but every one wants to spread and sell what they blindly believe! If you got different point of views you either a hater or trible minded!.

The other thing they want to group you "with or against"... Just wondering can some one critize one situation with "some one" and agree an another situation OR you have to hate or to support?!!!!

Do we have to criticize individuals or activities?

Salam

NGONGE

QL, it’s a conundrum that was first written by the Somalis long ago, saaxib. All the old men who knew the answers to it are now dead. However, on one of my rare visits to a Somali coffee shop, I accidentally eavesdropped on a soliloquy of an intoxicated Qat-chewing mad old man and stumbled upon the key to unravel this puzzle! Of course, it’s not certain that an idea imparted by a madman will contain the solution to such a grave problem, alas, desperate times and desperate measures, saaixb.

The old man was chanting the old children’s song “ Dem Bones†and it all made sense to me. You see, the foot bone is connected to the anklebone and that in turn is connected to the shinbone, which is connected to the knee bone, etc!

The song if you remember, goes on to disconnect all the bones after starting by connecting them and THIS is what you’re asking, saaxib. You’re wondering why would people support “warlords†and attempting to solve the conundrum!

Try to retrace your steps and find your way out of this Somali labyrinth, saaxib. Ignore the drivel of all the news pundits, the old ladies and the tendentious analysers. Follow the “dry bonesâ€, my friend. There is no such thing as “warlords†in Somalia. The term “warlord†was probably coined by a naïve outsider that didn’t understand the intricacy of Somali society! These men are not as enigmatic as a Pancho Villa, saaxib. Neither are they plantation owners oppressing the poor peasants! One would also be stretching the truth if one calls them revolutionaries.

So, what could they be if they’re “none of the aboveâ€, I hear you say? They’re you and me, saaxib. They just happen to be at the top of this decaying pyramid that is Somali society. One is tempted to wonder that if these “warlords†are at the top, and if all the bones (when connected) lead to the head, wouldn’t severing that head save us all from these sick individuals and free people to work on rebuilding Somalia!

Ah! How great would it be to cut the head of the snake and stop the spread of its venom! But, Somalia is not a snake; Somalia is more of a deadly lizard and these “warlords†are merely tails, which no matter how many times you amputate, new tails will spring up and the wheel of destruction will keep on turning.

With all due respect saaxib, your question is a redundant one. I’m sure you already know why people support warlords and one needn’t go into a long explanation or discussion on that issue. Why a supposedly “healed†and disconnected “foot bone†that got washed up on the shores of America/Europe still acts and behaves as if it’s still part of the ailing body is the real question you need to ask, saaixb.

Ngone,

The best post I have seen you pen down. Simply on point without no long-winded reasoning; and delighted I am to proclaim that I concur with your shrilling analysis.

Good one dude.

"Warlords are not modernizers with a new political order in mind; rather, they are an opportunistic class of men who rise in a country previously ruled by a government that lost legitimacy and a disciplined army."

We Somalis should view ALL warlords, as men who have collective responsibility for Somalia’s destruction, and the cold-blooded murder of thousands of her citizens.

Unlike the past where there were no archives for the heinous crimes committed in Somali, today we should make sure we use technology to Document the information on all crimes against humanity committed in the Somali territory while the memory of such crimes is still fresh in the minds of the victims and witnesses. This in turn would be used against them at some stage or other and be brought to justice. We should preserve and safe guard such information until such a time as either the international community or the Somali State (if at all) is in a position to persecute such criminals. These actions are moral (and legal?) obligation on all humanity and will save lives and make our country safer knowing that anyone could be brought to justice.

I suppose as OGirl put it you need to be free to express yourself without any duress. Many warlords themselves have the blessings of many of their people however; all we can do is basically educate those blind followers who don’t even get the desired support for their constant blind support. Many in both Diaspora and back home do spend three quarters of their time drumming support collecting money and ofcouse make use of the internet to conceive and convince many of us that they are surely the right people to bring peace to a ravaged with a majority or poor and uneducated mars who just need good leaders. The fact is that, as long as Somali public and private properties confiscated by warlords in Somalia are used for personal interests, Somalia will remain an endangered State.

Some parts of south Somalia are right now held at ransom and are reminiscent of parts of South America where there are no go cities used for illicit drug trafficking. It is said that warlords use their agents of international drug traffickers to transport illicit drugs such as heroine from Balidoogle airport nearby Mogadishu City to various transit points, according to some sources in Mogadishu. Consequently, abuse of narcotic drugs by children and youths in Mogadishu City is rapidly increasing, and it has strongly fuelled the brutal civil war in the city. It is a business that is fiercely sustained by Mogadishu institutions and warlords.

Propagandizing, hate speech, fears and family memories of trauma, warlords offering up psychic relief through the language of toxic and exclusionary clannish – these speech acts are carried out within discourses of imagined communities with unimaginable consequences. Warlords deployed discourse naturalizing clan identity, war, and the nation-state, and the violent struggle among clan groups for control of first their immediate occupied territories then the state. But if some intellectuals resisted or reflected on these events, others invented them with such panache as seen lately the different forums. Clans enmeshed in victimization narratives, victimization narratives passed from one generation to the next, real and recent history experiences of trauma and injury, the manipulation of emotional vulnerabilities under conditions of economic and political crisis, the provocation of personalities more inclined toward intolerant and stereotypical views of otherness, myths of clan statehood, the mobilization of criminal and even psychopathic elements, young irregular sons drugged and used as pones, militias, outsiders committing phantom acts of violence to simulate ‘clanic conflict,’ warlords and community leaders planning psychological strategies.

We should get together and fight these folks and we should never ever give them the qualified support that they somehow got used to. They are criminals and should always be treated with contempt. There may be peace without social justice, but it will be short-lived. Clan violence today does not require the mobilization of every individual “in†a state or clan group, nor even a majority. Given the destructiveness of weapons, the accessibility of technology that can be used destructively (Net) and the unconventional ways technology can be used destructively, the willingness to attack civilians, and the level of social and economic deprivation in Somalia today, it does not even require more than a handful of co-conspirators in Mogadishu or Nairobi to ignite it.

Qorshel all I can say is -not in a million years bro. don’t want to have that on my conscience.

Ngonge As you said, it is a conundrum that baffles even the smartest of the us and he summed it up by saying it is a

“deadly lizard and these “warlords†are merely tails, which no matter how many times you amputate, new tails will spring up and the wheel of destruction will keep on turning..â€

To acertain extent yes but I’m not so sure saxiib if your total withdrawal of believe from anything good ever coming out of the Somali society is the right cause. It would seem to me like if you had a patient who had cancer and possibly diagnosed by one specialist that would be enough for you to condemn that patient as irrevocably ill and hence the only way out is death. I would think you would opt for a second opinion and maybe third depending on your commitment to doing all you can. We do know the fact that we have one of the most complex societies in this world and the fabric of it all is deeply rooted in clan hence the never ending story of tails that keep germinating like plants.

I wouldn’t hold all Somalis to be part and parcel of that boat/lizards that warlords and their tails connected to lizards ride. I certainly would give the benefit of the doubt to many out there who are working tirelessly on a daily basis to educate and at least do their bit in as far as any reconciliation is concerned. We are people living in communities that maintain attachments defined in ethnic terms as, less advanced, more primitive, and “clanic,†hence, more likely to be motivated by more emotional than rational forces however, everything that doesn’t work of function, there are always solutions which may either be hard or simple depending on how one looks at it.

As one Somali put it “it is high time these honchos be brought to justice.

QL sxb i beilve these time is better if we try to be posative rather then nagetive. lets be optomistic say insha alaah things will go these time in the right way. we all hate all the war criminals, or Qabqablayaash or what ever you want call them. But what can we do If one our Qabqable we call him a hero, couse he defented our tribe or our interst. I beilve the best thing to do these time is just to be optomistic and just keep our prayers. In shalaah alaah things will go find. Now alread thing are alooking better in 2005. War leader are caming in agreement, they choose a persident Pm and wasiiro all of thses people who are going to rule our bloved homeland are war crimes. Therfor we don't have another option Just to pray and wait and see waht hapens.

Lets not try to lie to ourself, we all know we suport these war criminal in everyway. The only thing we can say is lets keep our hopes up, and belive that things inshalaaha will get better.

Jumatatu said clearly " my defence for the warlords of Mogadishu will stand as long as we have stooges in here who tend to give Yeey the status of 'Mother Teresa'" So here he is defending his warlords bassed " you do same"!.

Like you sister OG, I was dumbstruck at first by Jumas reasoning, but after some contemplating came to reason, he isn’t exactly alone in this; most Somalis are probably in the same circle of thinking.

However on the other hand, NGONGE has made many truthful and spot-on points.

They’re you and me, saaxib.

For it is us who support them, whether morally or financially.

The problem lies with two points as far as leadership is concerned, those who knew best (our elders) have all but moved on to the next world and those who now know best (the religious and intellectuals) all seem to be sitting back and not facing these warlords as a united front. Each man is happy to live in their carefree cushioned life whilst leaving the affairs of our homeland in the hands of the least capable. This is the point, which irritated me most on my visit to Somalia. Amazingly the country is running on the efforts of these good people, yet they always seem to be missing from the leadership roles- many I believe have given hope of a united country under the one authority.

People in general just follow, only a few men lead. Unfortunately for Somalis and Somalia, we follow the most decedent folks amongst us.

It's better to support the devil you know than the devil you don't!

I believe, since most are quite aware of why, the question begging an answer should be HOW we come to support such War Criminals in Somalia especially as Ngonge pointed out, by those that are living on the "outside"?

Will Duco in an ideal situation, I would 99% agree with you but brother when a wrong is done it has to be talked about or corrected and that’s the only way forward. Something like the South African peace reconciliation to calm the people down and to heal.

The majority of Somali politicians today are mostly former Siad Barre ministers who looted and destroyed the country and therefore lack legitimacy or new warlords who have no respect for country and human rights. What we need are young, educated, untainted and visionary politicians. Apparently there is no single high profile politician in Somalia who can meet the needs and aspirations of Somalis as a whole. The young need to get rid of these dinosaurs so we can have a major political change within the Somali state. This in turn should guarantee a new Somalia on par with the world states.

Rahima and Msword I wouldn’t necessarily agree with you as blind support and opting for the devil you know could be the end of what is right and honourable. Looking at what has happened over in Nairobi, we shouldn’t expect a lot to come out of it especially with qabiil loyalists and believers who bought power for their clans rather the national interest and peaceful reconciliation of this fragmented country.

We should also look at foreign forces not only as a threat to our national sovereignty but a threat to the national healthy of the population who could possibly be hit by AIDS and other strange diseases. It also makes the Somalis as a whole a laughing stoke and people who can never achieve any form of consensus without the barrel of a gun. I suppose in its right that we cant seem to achieve what other humans are capable of in away but the least we can do is try harder to do it ourselves rather than call for an IGAD ARMY who are already calling for a half a billion dollars for 8 months which may turn into hell.

I think it will rather take a collective determination and responsibility among the Somali people to insure that we move forward and build our country.`

Now is the time for real changes rather than cosmetic superficial changes.

Now is the time to expose the blood-thirsty, devious agendas of some criminals in power.

Now is the time to denounce the brutality of the state organized goons/militia supervised by warlords/ministers.

Now is the time to begin mass action against vigilante forces and troops in the country.

Now is the time to defend human rights and the rights of every Somali individual.

Now is the time to demand justice and peace for all the families destroyed by these bandits.

Now is the time to fight against the politicisation of Clan differences.

Now is the time for united, collective democratic and consistent campaigns for peace and unity.

Now is the time to stand and up and be counted.

Now is the time to get rid of the culture of blind support, silence and fear.
