Restore Security, Moi Tells Somali President

- Thursday, March 10, 2005 at 15:01

The East African Standard (Nairobi)

Francis Openda

Nairobi

Former President Moi yesterday challenged the new Somali Government to give priority to national security.

He told President Abdulahi Ahmed and his newly elected government to take advantage of the goodwill the country was enjoying from the international community.

"The common man needs security to enable them move around unharmed," Moi said.

He was speaking at his Moi Africa Foundation offices at Kabarnet Gardens, Nairobi, when the Somali delegation paid him a courtesy call. He said he had been associated with mediating the Somali peace process for a long time and looked forward to the day when the country would enjoy peace.

The two held a closed-door meeting for about 20 minutes before addressing journalists.

President Ahmed arrived shortly after 3 pm with his official car sandwiched between two security teams and motorcycle outriders.

President Ahmed commended Moi whom he said played a key role in initiating the Somali peace process in Eldoret. "I want to thank him on behalf of Somali people for what he did for us," said Ahmed.

He said Somali people would ever be grateful to Kenyans for their magnanimity in hosting the talks, which were concluded after "so many difficulties".
