Cops credit Somali community with helping find suspects

One of the kids' mom is in jail (she hid him in her house for 3 nights after he came home soaked in blood and asked her to get him a ticket to Canada) and will probably be prosecuted for not turning her 17-years old murderer in but the parents of the second kid are not in jail bc once they found out the first mom was put in jail, they turned their son in.

That is good news if the perpetrators are in police custody. Now these guys have to pay the price and be punished to the max and to let them suffer so that in the future other kids woill have to think twice b4 ever trying to carry a gun or knife. I say put them in the death row. execution by the firing squad will do fine and sooner than later.....

They will not be executed as we all wished, The state of Minnesota banned the death penalty in 1911 but the life sentence will be enough punishment for these kids.

^ Zack, they are juveniles (teenagers) so would that help them get lesser punishment (showed lil mercy)??

These kids will not learn anything from this, believe me. There are have been many arrests in the past for varies violent crimes, some kids serving life sentences but still this happens and will probably continue to happen, its the nature of inner city living. These kids need early intervention when families see the signs of trouble.

MINNEAPOLIS - We should learn more today about last Wednesday night's brutal triple murder inside a Minneapolis corner grocery store.

 

Hennepin county prosecutors have until late this morning to file charges against one of the two teens police say gunned down three men in cold blood.

 

Police have said very little about the two 17-year-olds who they've arrested since Wednesday night's shooting inside the Seward Market on the corner of 24th and Franklin.

 

The first arrest came late Friday or early Saturday. Prosecutors got a 48-hour extension from judge so they could continue building their case and move the charging deadline from Monday morning to today.

 

Police say the two killed market owner Abdi-Fata Warfa, his cousin Mohammed Warfa and Anwar Mohammed -- who'd just stopped by for some groceries.

 

Some in the Somali community are outraged because police have released very little information from the beginning and there were never any suspect descriptions -- even though nine security cameras inside the store caught the killings.

 

Police have said they understand the frustration but don't to do anything that would jeopardize the investigation.

 

The teen suspects may be charged as adults.

Criminal charges against two teenaged suspects in last week's Seward Market triple homicide were delayed Wednesday for one more day.

 

It was the second time this week that such an extension was granted. A source close to the case said the delay was necessary because certain test results were not back as of Wednesday afternoon. The source said such delays aren't unusual under those circumstances in homicide cases.

 

The extensions are not a sign of a problem with the case, said Minneapolis police Capt. Amelia Huffman, commander of the homicide unit.

 

Killed in the Jan. 6 shooting at Seward Market and Halal Meats at E. Franklin and 25th Avenues S. were store employee Abdifatah Warfa, 28, his cousin, Mohamed Warfa, 30, and Anwar Mohammed, 31, a customer.

 

Charges now are expected by 1:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Rondah Kinchlow, spokeswoman for the Hennepin County attorney's office. No more extensions are allowed under the law.

 

A relative of two of the dead men said the family understands the delay. "It's fine as long as they are doing the right thing," said Abdi Mohamed, the cousin of Seward Market owner Faysal Warfa. "It looks like they needed some more time to analyze the evidence, so we're OK with that."

Jan 14, 2010 1:31 pm US/Central 2 Teens Charged With Murder In Triple Homicide

 

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) --- The two teenagers arrested for the triple homicide at the Seward Market in South Minneapolis have been charged for murder in the first degree.

 

Mahdi Hassan Ali, 17, of Minneapolis and Ahmed Shire Ali, 17, of Minneapolis will be tried as adults.

 

According to the criminal complaint, the two teens entered the store, on 2431 East Franklin Ave. South, in masks for a robbery. Mahdi Ali directed everyone in the store by gunpoint to lie on the floor. He then demanded money from Mohamed Warfa and Osman Elmi, the two employees of the store.

 

Two other customers were hiding in a freezer during the incident. They told police that when the two teens arrived, they were told not to move by Ahmed Ali. They heard Mahdi Ali yell, "This is a robbery." Ahmed Ali demanded one of the customers' cell phone and went through the pockets of the other customer. That's when gunshots were fired and Ahmed Ali ran toward the front of the store.

 

Mahdi Ali has been identified by store surveillance video as the gunman. Mahdi Ali had Warfa and Elmi on the floor when another customer walked in and disrupted the robbery. Mahdi Ali immediately turned and shot the customer, later identified as Anwar Mohammed, who fell to the ground.

 

After shooting Mohammed, Mahdi Ali ran out of the store and Warfa followed him. Within seconds, Mahdi Ali shot Warfa and surveillance videos show Warfa falling to the ground near the back entryway of the store.

 

Mahdi Ali then went back into the store, chased down Elmi and shot him, as he was attempting to make a phone call.

 

Mahdi Ali then left the store again, firing a second shot into Mohammed as he left.

 

The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. Jan. 6, when police received a call of a robbery and shooting that had just occurred.

 

Police arrived to find two deceased men, lying in a pool of blood in the entryway, and another man dead further inside the store.

 

According to the charges, Ahmed Ali admitted that he and Mahdi Ali went together to the market to rob the store. He also stated that he and Mahdi Ali used a gun in the robbery and that Mahdi Ali shot three men during the incident.

 

Ahmed Ali stated that he did not carry a weapon but did confront the two customers in the freezer and kept them from interfering with the robbery, according to charges.

 

 

The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's office conducted autopsies of the victims and ruled all three deaths a homicide, from the result of gunshot wounds.

 

Ahmed Ali and Mahdi Ali are currently in custody.

 

A first-degree murder charge carries a penalty of life in prison.
