Championing Somaliland’s Statehood: A Roadmap to Regional Leadership-Mwami Rwamba

I proudly support Somaliland’s pursuit of statehood—a model of stability and democracy in the Horn of Africa. For over 30 years, Somaliland has demonstrated resilience, holding free elections, fostering inclusive governance, and building a peaceful society. Recognizing its sovereignty is not just a matter of justice but a strategic step toward a stronger, more sustainable region.

Here’s a road map:

Security: Somaliland’s strategic location along the Gulf of Aden positions it to safeguard the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a vital global trade route. By recognizing Somaliland, the international community can support its well-trained coast guard and police to counter piracy and extremism. Partnerships with nations like the UK and US could enhance training, intelligence sharing, and maritime security, creating jobs and ensuring regional stability.

Energy: Somaliland’s abundant solar and wind resources offer immense potential for renewable energy. With investments in hybrid mini-grids, as seen in projects like ESRES, Somaliland can reduce electricity costs (from $1/kWh to $0.65/kWh) and reliance on imported diesel, saving 9,000t CO2 annually. Scaling these efforts through public-private partnerships would boost workers’ livelihoods, drive green growth, and align with net zero goals.

Tourism: Somaliland’s rich history, from Laas Geel’s ancient rock art to Berbera’s pristine beaches, is a hidden gem. International recognition would unlock investment in infrastructure, like hotels and safe transport, while promoting inclusive employment in hospitality. Marketing Somaliland as a safe, culturally vibrant destination could rival regional tourism hubs, fostering economic empowerment.

Recognizing Somaliland’s statehood is the first step to unlocking its potential. By investing in its security, energy, and tourism sectors, we can build a prosperous, inclusive, and sustainable future.
