Somaliland President Abdurrahman Ciiro to Visit United States Amid Growing Strategic Ties

Hargeisa, April 2025 — Somaliland President Abdurrahman Mohamed Abdullahi "Ciiro" is expected to make an official visit to the United States in May 2025, marking a potential turning point ,in  Somaliland republic’s international relations. The visit, seen as a historic diplomatic milestone, comes as Washington increasingly views the Horn of Africa as a key strategic front in countering Chinese influence in the region.

President Ciiro, who was elected in late 2024, will reportedly meet with senior U.S. officials, policymakers, and think tanks to discuss a range of issues including security cooperation, trade, and diplomatic recognition. The visit signals warming ties between Somaliland and the United States, which has so far refrained from formally recognizing Somaliland's independence from Somalia, declared in 1991.

A major focus of the talks is expected to be the port city of Berbera, where the United States has shown interest in establishing a military base. Located along the strategic Gulf of Aden, Berbera offers a vital foothold near the Bab el Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints. A potential U.S. base there would enhance America’s ability to project power in the Red Sea and East Africa, while serving as a counterbalance to growing Chinese military and commercial influence in Djibouti and the wider region.

Analysts suggest the Ciiro administration is eager to leverage Somaliland’s geostrategic value to forge new international partnerships, especially with Western powers. For the United States, the visit presents an opportunity to deepen engagement with a stable and democratic partner in an otherwise volatile region.

While formal recognition of Somaliland by the U.S. remains uncertain, President Ciiro’s visit may pave the way for a closer working relationship one built on mutual interests in regional security, trade, and democratic governance.

Khadafi

It has been 30 years and no recognition is in the works. On the contrary, SSC and various non-triangle cities showed that not even "somaliland" agrees on separatism. Triangle cities politics are based on feelings. One day they sell the coast to the Emirates and the next day to Ethiopia. A funny Maahmaah is nin yaabin ayaa yaabay. Yahuu. We saw the bizarre thing when a fat short oromo man with a lot of jewels in his hand got the first podium in Somaliland. Nageey was the tone. Suddenly young Somali youth in Hargeysa and the triangle cities would learn that they were oromo and thus millions. Decisions are made through smoke-filled fadhi rooms where jaadka iyo marqaamka gives quick decisions. One wonders what Cigaal and Maykal Maryama would have said about the fat oromo man, YAAB!

What a load of absolute nonsense. The two districts of Sool taleex and laascanood represent but a small minority; the overwhelming majority of the people of Somaliland stand resolutely in favour of what is best for their own well being and unreservedly support their right to statehood. Whether it takes thirty years, sixty years, or six hundred years, we shall never, under any circumstance, be subjugated by foreign rule. Once you comprehend this fundamental truth, your own nation will be far better for it.

Somaliland is gone, irrevocably so. There is no conceivable incentive, nor any viable means, that could ever reunite it with the most failed state in the world the bunker

What we choose to do with our land is solely for us to decide  it is not for you to dictate. You are free to govern your own territory as you see  wish  Have you ever heard me say that you are not to  allow groups like AlShabaab, pirates, or AMISOM into your land?

Michael Mariano was a patriot of Somaliland, and Ina Cigaal woulddo everything so  that Somaliland flourishes as a prosperous, independent nation. His entire legacy is Somaliland created the army the flag the parliament institutions , dalkagaaga u tasho saaxib  iyo dadkaagaa ga
