Somaliland: The Last Beacon in the Horn of Africa

Turkey’s strategic maneuvering in Somalia is no secret. With an embassy, 2,000 troops on the ground—and another 3,000 en route—alongside a naval fleet and its largest overseas base, Ankara’s military presence in Somalia is a bold assertion of power. The aim, however, is clear: to secure Turkish economic and geopolitical interests, not to stabilize Somalia.

Meanwhile, China’s subtle yet significant contributions—ranging from non-lethal aid to advanced surveillance technology—further bolster Somali federal forces. This twin push from Turkey and China creates a perilous imbalance in the region.

At the heart of the Horn of Africa stands Somaliland, the only functioning democracy amid a sea of instability. Yet, as Turkish and Chinese influence encroaches, Somaliland’s sovereignty and democratic integrity face an existential threat.

A Strategic Imperative

It is now incumbent upon Western democracies—the United States, United Kingdom, and Taiwan—to step in. Somaliland must not be left to fend for itself while external forces reshape the regional power dynamics. A comprehensive package to bolster Somaliland’s defense capabilities across air, land, and sea is essential.

What is Needed:

•Advanced Air Defense: Modern fighter jets and surveillance drones to secure its skies.

•Naval Modernization: Up-to-date naval vessels, anti-ship missiles, and radar systems to protect critical maritime routes.
•Enhanced Ground Forces: Armoured vehicles, artillery, and rigorous training to fortify its borders.

•Strategic Partnerships: Enhanced cooperation with Western defense agencies for intelligence sharing and rapid response.

A Call to Action

Turkey and China are redefining the geopolitical landscape in the Horn of Africa. To preserve the only beacon of democracy in the region, decisive Western intervention is required. Failing to act now risks not only Somaliland’s fut
ure but also the broader stability of an entire region teetering on the brink of authoritarian influence.

The time for complacency is over—Western support for Somaliland’s military capacity building is not merely an option; it is a strategic necessity.
