Because,Raila Odinga was sympathetic to Islam & has actually met Sh.Shareef. He was an outspoken opponent of the Ethiopian invasion in Mog.

He signed a Memorundum of Understanding(MOU) with the Kenyan Muslims whereby among other things, he has promised to bring back all innocent Muslims who were renditioned to Ethiopia & promised to bring to court those folks who were responsible for those illegal act.

In this disputed election He has close to 80% approval rating among Muslims and his ODM party performed extremely well in Muslim areas, bagging about 25+ MPs.

In all seriousness, this was a man who is a Pan Africanist, a socialists & a very bold maverick leader who can never be swayed or intimidated by the powers that be. In contrast, his opponent, the octogenerian Kibaki, is an ally of Bush(he got invited to statehouse) and is reffered to in state department circulars as " close ally in the war of terror"(read Somalia).

Raila Odinga was even endorsed by Sh.Turki,Explains why Duke,Sahar & Emperor are all Pro Kibaki. :D

This was a bitterly contested election that was stolen from the people of Kenya. The four largest provinces in Kenya all voted for Odinga & his ODM. It beats logic that someone can win 110 out of 210 consituencies in 6 out of 8 provinces and still lose. With the support, mind you of the four biggest tribes after the kikuyus. The Luos(15%), the Luhyas(16+%),The Kalenjins(15%), Coast(10%) and another 15% from Massais,Turkana,Somalis & Kisii's. Mind Boggling i tell you. Its like saying, the sports section is the most visited forum in SOL.

In brief, the president is telling ODM, President Kuffour, Gordon Brown, Desmond Tutu and Madam Fraser and all 4.5 million Kenyans who voted against him - YOU CAN GO TO HELL, I AM PRESIDENT.

Even as ODM shows goodwill by suspending protest rallies, the president is throwing mud at them by recalling parliament and naming his cabinet. The questions is: Is there need to continue negotiating with an individual who has shown over the last five years that he cannot honour agreement??

[edit]

Look at whom Kibaki has chosen for Defence? Yussuf Hajji, and this appointment makes you wonder what sort of a government Kibaki is planning to put in place. Bear in mind that a large percentage of the army and the General Service Unit (GSU) are Somalis, and that is not forgetting the country's police comissioner is Somali. If you ask me, the appointment of this cabinet is the impetus of a dictatorship . No doubt.

Did you see the new cabinet listing? It is full of hotch-potch ego-centric maniacs. I would never call this a fair cabinet when the party that rightly won the election has been excluded. It will make you think that Kibaki is in no way willing to negotiate with ODM on the power sharing. He appointed Musyoka as his VP. Just when I thought he will be wise enough to share the cabinet with Odinga ,when they meet tomorrow, he proved it to me that he is a non-strategist . When you have a populist challenger like Odinga people would closely be scrutinizing your peace building effort. I am afraid anxiety would sweep again and we will see more violence if Kibaki is unwilling to share the government with ODM, which rightly deserves a fair hearing. Kibaki is afraid of loosing power if he shares the government. Kibaki has failed to tackle corruption, graft, and misuse of power. As much as I love peaceful Kenya I would love to see him overthrown peacefully by the citizens without any violence and bloodshed.

Kenya unlike its neighbors has not slid into warfare, but this election is one that proved a whiff of intimidation Kenyan people have been living under. The condition for fair vote never existed in Kenya even when we go back to the first multi-party election in 1992. There was rigging of election. People were killed in places like Mollo and burnt forest just like today even though this election has blown the cover. Kikuyus, very business savy people, were elite even though they haven’t been in power since 1978. Ever wondered how in the world they were spread all the four Kenyan corners? Kenyatta, just like Moi, made sure his people owned lands even in Kalenjin land. The kikuyus enjoyed patronage under Kenyatta so did the Kalenjins under Moi. Yes Kikuyus have gobbled up too much of the country cake, but changing the tribe of the president will not change the nepotism of Kenyan leaders.

Odings has courted the Kenyans MUSLIMS to vote for him in return of fair scrutiny of the Muslim community. I applauded him for doing that. What I am interested in is a leader that will put all the tribalism behind and build a unified country with a peacefull coexistant between the forty two tribes. Odinga might have a been a new glimpse of hope for Kenya, but I doubt iff he would have excised the nepotism cancer from Kenya politics.

Cool heads will prevail. Kenya is no Somalia. The stakes are high. There are countries who depend on its port. There are third party groups who have made huge investment in this country. There is Somali region which we obviously all care about its well being. Not to mention Somali refugees who have settled there after they fled from the civil war that engulfed their home country. They have made a huge gains due to the peace loving and civilized Kenyans who have welcomed them with open arms. I should know. Things will come down in due time Insha'Allah.

^^Thats the mistake people make and it leads to complacency and total chaos, sxb. Poor Kenyans don't give a toss about who holds a stake in Kenya or who isn't. They are only concerned with their own frustrations, and don't think that far out.

And if Kibaki and his elite rich kinsmen get away with this one, The Luos,Kalenjins,The Luhyas & the Coasterians ALL know that they will forever be under Kikuyu dominance. And that is what they are fighting.

Trust me,I think,Kenya will go into turmoil. This Impasse will not be resolved the way Kibakis wants to!

^^Most outsiders have this naive meloncholic image of Kenya, and think Kenya's internal dynamics are maintained by outsiders. One just hopes that they'll wisen up and see the real face of Kenya's ethnicized politics for what it is, sxb. The outsiders' views infuriates most average Kenyans, and to show them what the realpolitik on the ground is really like, might go on a macheti slashing spree.

Trade-offs buddy trade-offs. Unlike you warmongers, peace and stability are far more important to Kenyans methinks. Granted there are corruption and bais in the system but that discrepency can be straighten out without putting the entire house the Kenya is on fire. Anarchy doesn't benefit anyone awoowe.

Had Aideed Sr. managed to keep the lid on negative backlash his knsmen axacted against old establishment he would have saved Somalia and crowned himself as the uncontested presidenct. Look at us today. What did addressing injustice instituted by military junta has done for the populace.

No awoowe let peace prevail in Kenya. Condition is not that bad to wish for anarchy.
