Garowe (PP News Desk) — The ubiquitous use of social media in Somalia yesterday exposed brutality in Garowe. A fake police officer was filmed severely beating a Yemeni refugee child refugee in Garowe. The video clip was widely shared on social media.

Within an hour, the Garowe Police took the impersonator into custody upon the orders of Garowe Mayor Geeddi Ahmed, who invited the father, Mohamed Adel Hussein, and his son, Adel Mohamed, to his office to offer an apology.

In line with Somali tradition, the Mayor draped a men’s shawl over the shoulders of the father and son as a gesture of respect.

The Mayor told the father that “the suspect, Abdifatah Abdinur, is not a police officer, and he has been arrested. Charges will be pressed against him.”

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect wearing a police uniform is not a police officer,” the Garowe Police Division stated in a press release.
