Shipping Arabia, February 20, 2025 — DP World has committed $400 million to the development of Berbera Port in Somaliland, aiming to enhance its capabilities as a central maritime hub for landlocked African nations. This investment was confirmed by Abdirahman Abdullahi, President of the Republic of Somaliland, during a panel discussion on strategic investments and economic transformation.

President Abdullahi highlighted the historical significance of Berbera Port, noting its strategic utilization by global powers during the Cold War due to its prime location. He expressed optimism about the future role of the port under the partnership with DP World, enhancing Somaliland’s position as a burgeoning economic gateway.

Sultan bin Sulayem, Chairman and CEO of DP World, elaborated on the company’s regional strategy, particularly in relation to Ethiopia, which he noted requires multiple ports to support its population surpassing 100 million. Bin Sulayem described Berbera Port as a previously neglected asset that DP World is revitalizing in collaboration with the Somaliland government to facilitate increased trade flows, especially with Ethiopia.

The development of Berbera Port is seen as pivotal in linking Ethiopia and Somaliland, thereby boosting economic activities and industrial development in the region. Bin Sulayem stressed that DP World’s investments are driven by geographic and economic potentials rather than political motives, focusing on maximizing the logistical advantages offered by each location.

Further detailing the project’s scope, Bin Sulayem revealed that shipping operations have commenced, with plans for substantial industrial projects underway to leverage the port’s upgraded facilities. He affirmed DP World’s long-standing commitment to fostering economic growth in Africa, referencing additional investments in Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia, which underscore the company’s robust engagement across the continent.

This strategic move by DP World marks a significant step in enhancing maritime connectivity and economic integration for Africa, promising to transform Berbera into a key logistical hub that supports regional development and trade.
