A top Al Qaeda suspect believed to have taken part in both the bombing of the American Embassy in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam in 1998 may have been killed in US air strikes in Somalia.

Mr Fazul Abdullah Mohammad, 32, is believed to have masterminded the attacks that killed 225 people, majority of them Kenyans.

He was also indicted with the attempted downing of an Israeli jetliner in Mombasa and bombing of a Jewish owned hotel in Kikambala in the Kenyan coast, where scores of Kenyans lost their lives.

The news broke even as it emerged that Kenyans could be among the over 30 people killed in Tuesday's air strikes in Somalia's Ras Kamboni.

On Wednesday, the United States forces struck four sites in southern Somalia, amidst mounting international criticism over Washington's military intervention.

They were Hayo, Garer, Bankajirow and Badmadowe, according to a Somali government source.

"Bankajirow was the last Islamist holdout. Bankajirow and Badmadowe were hit hardest," he added.

Pentagon officials confirmed one air attack on Monday, as part of a wider offensive involving Ethiopian planes.

"As we speak now, the area is being bombarded by the US air force," the Somali government official said.

According to reports, the dead Kenyans were among youths enlisted by the Union of Islamic Courts forces to fight the Ethiopian invasion in Somalia.

Kenyan officials acknowledged the deaths but remained tight-lipped over the number killed in the anarchic horn of Africa nation.

In Mombasa, there was anger and outrage over the Iraqi-style attacks in Somalia, with a religious organisation calling on the UN Security Council to intervene.

Wives held

"I have received a report from the American side chronicling the targets and list of damage," Mr Abdirizak Hassan, the Somali president's chief of staff, told The Associated Press. "One of the items they were claiming was that Fazul Abdullah Muhammad is dead."

Kenyan anti-terrorism officials at the Kiunga border said they were holding the wives of Fazul and another terror suspect, Mr Saleh Ali Saleh Nabhan, in Lamu for interrogation. Nabhan is also wanted by the FBI for the Kikambala bombing.

The women were seized with three children by detectives after fleeing the Ras Kamboni area.

The anti-terrorism officials said they were holding almost a dozen other terror suspects who were fleeing Somalia on Monday.

"They are providing crucial information on terror activities in the area and we hope to get a breakthrough. They are dangerous people," said a senior government official.

Eyewitnesses in two settlements between Doble and Afmadow said there were more US attacks in the area that lasted for between 30 to 45 minutes

Update: Have the three alleged terrorists being captured/killed in Somalia. If you know where they are please call the C.I.A, so they can bomb another Somali nomadic village. Or better call the president of Somalia, he will phone the B.B.C Somali radio to tell them get in touch with the C.I.A.
