Rasna Warah, a Prominent Kenyan Journalist, Passes Away

Rasna Warah was a brave and compassionate journalist and columnist who always stood on the side of the underdog.

Nairobi (PP News Desk) — Rasna Warah, who had diverse careers in journalism and communications, passed away in Nairobi. Warah succumbed to cancer, for which she was undergoing treatment.

Warah was a hard-hitting columnist for Daily Nation. She authored several books, including Mogadishu Then and Now: A Pictorial Tribute to Africa’s Most Wounded City and War Crimes: How Warlords, Politicians, Foreign Governments, and Aid Agencies Conspired to Create a Failed State in Somalia.

Rasna documented what Mogadishu lost during the civil war.

Warah also worked for the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) as an editor and report writer. One of her books, Unsilenced: Unmasking the United Nations’ Culture of Cover-Ups, Corruption, and Impunity, focused on her experiences as a UN officer and highlighted how corruption was tolerated within the higher echelons of the UN system.

The Daily Nation, for which Rasna was a columnist, remembered her indefatigability.

Her book on Mogadishu offered a detailed analysis of the war’s impact on the city’s oldest districts, such as Shangaani and Hamarweyne, which were founded more than 1,400 years ago and are  home to urban social groups.
