Faroole's concerns are legit; both the president and the parliament of Puntland are united against Sheikh Shariif's ill intention toward the state. I don't understand where Faroole or Puntland state are coming from. Puntland clearly is unable to take Laas Caanood from Somaliland, why then be so opposed to local's efforts to act in that regard? The anticipation was that Professor Abdiweli who is a friend of Farmaajo, was to soothe the general sense of unease that is now caricatured as “war” between Faroole and Shariif, by pressing forward a rapprochement of sort between the two bodies (TFG and Puntland). There was even a working plan for Farmaajo and Abdiweli to visit Puntland within a month of new cabinet announcement.

 

Putting aside Faroole’s brusque persona, I sense Shariif’s demands that his “office boys” as Faroole put it, obtain Puntland’s share of cabinet was a step in the wrong direction. It is legitimate fight on Faroole’s part that the share of cabinet ministers allocated for Puntland clans be given to folks that are responsive advocates of the state’s interest at the federal level regardless of what sub-sub-clan they hail from. Faroole argues Shariif's friends are not. It is a no-brainer.

Libaax, you live in the civilized world awoowe, what is this misconception about the nature of federalism as it works in the federal policy level? The cabinet is and should be completely at the discretion of those in power on the federal level without sense of control in representation by those at the state level. Puntland was defeated by Somaliland clan Militia back in 2007 in Las Anod, After 3 years Puntland is either weak or doesn't care about SSC Region

Suleiman Ahmed Isse and SSC challenged Puntland's claim on Sool and Cayn... in that regard the dispute Faroole has with this group is legit. Haven lost his bid for the states presidency Mr. Suleiman has sworn to lead the state in domestic instability. Thus far though, the state has restrained their supporters from Sool and Cayn to avoid intra-clan bloodshed, a positive move in Puntland's part indeed.

In light of what Sharif's "mentors" argue your whole point there is flawed… Sharif and his cohorts think any recognition of regional authorities, such as Puntland, would degrade the legitimacy of the TFG in the eyes of the international community; the mentors favor a centralized state that would preserve their positions and forestall the threat to their power from self-determination in the regions. But taking the F out of the TFG as they planned from get-go has yet to materialize and that is precisely because Puntland remains unwilling to compromise on its perceived vital interests when it is engaged with a weak partner that has nothing to offer but access to the coffers of donor powers, which the weaker partner is all the more jealous to guard, because that is its only asset.

 

Puntland in my opinion is the only honest partner and they should be commended for insisting its fair due.

Sarreeye, I am not positive I comprehend your "winner-takes-all" state of mind in these difficult times. This is Somalia, for god sake. The nation has been at war for two decades. Reconciliation and rapprochement attitude is paramount if one is serious about restoring the nation’s broken psyche. This is not a multi-party classical democracy. This is Somalia, a nation where mere cabinet ministers are often seen as the elected representatives of regional/clan interest.

 

What is the concern if Puntland is given 3 ministers that work well with its parliament, President, vice President and ministers? Did the old reconciliation process Farmaajo was to move forwards morph into a process of alienation and estrangement by appointing PINOs hostile to the very values Puntland is founded on? If such "ill will" is precisely what Shariif and Farmaajo have in mind, then there is no argument here.

 

Awoowe, President Faroole is against the mere appointment of PINOs (Puntlander-in-name-only) who are there to fight against the state’s interest. There are many of them and they belong to every sub-sub-sub clan of Puntland. It is not that difficult to appreciate Faroole’s logic here.

 

If Shariif and Farmaajo want to “do they thang” as we say in America, then so be it. But let us not protest when Faroole articulates a policy that neutralizes a perceived threat.
