Mogadishu Police Evict 300 Families from Former Taleh Hotel Site

Mogadishu (PP News Desk) —  The Mogadishu Police today carried out eviction orders at the premises of Taleh Hotel, which squatters had turned into a residential neighbourhood in 1991 after the collapse of the central government. The eviction order affected more than 300 families who had been living on plots of land that once belonged to Taleh Hotel, previously under the Ministry of Tourism.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the Mogadishu Municipality gave each family US$3,500 to relocate. The spate of evictions enforced by the Mogadishu Police began with the eviction order at the Dabdamiska (Fire Brigade) site in South Mogadishu.

Opposite the Taleh Hotel premises lies the Mogadishu fairgrounds (Fiyooraha), where squatters have turned pavilions into houses. A similar eviction order could be enforced at the fairgrounds.

A land law lecturer in Mogadishu told Puntland Post that any plot of land used to build illegal housing will face demolition. “The evictions and demolition orders will affect many neighbourhoods in South Mogadishu,” the lawyer said.
