Deeq A. Posted December 10 Press Release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Date: December 10, 2024 International Day of Human Rights: A Call for Somaliland Legitime Right for Recognition and Sovereignty [Hargeisa, Somaliland] — On this International Day of Human Rights, the Somaliland Advocacy and Development Foundation (SADFO) reaffirms its commitment to the fundamental rights and freedoms that belong to all individuals, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, or background. This year, we draw attention to the ongoing human rights situation in Somaliland, a region that has been denied the basic rights and recognition it deserves for over three decades. The decision of the Somaliland people’s referendum in 2000 to regain their rejected freedom on 26th June 1960 is permanent and irreversible. The independence of Somaliland is not a dream but a reality in the hearts of Somaliland people since May 18, 1991. Somaliland people have chosen their destination and they are not for turning at any cost. Somaliland not only deserves recognition but also a World Nobel Peace Prize for its achievement in peace, reconciliation and good governance. The Somaliland people chose their destination 33 years ago in a democratic process after 31 years of failed voluntary unification with former Italian Somalia. Despite Somaliland’s efforts to establish itself as a peaceful and democratic state, the international community, including the United Nations (UN) and the African Union (AU), has failed to acknowledge its statehood. This denial has perpetuated a cycle of human rights violations against the people of Somaliland, who continue to seek recognition and the rights afforded to all nations. To say the least it is double standard, injustice and discriminatory that Somaliland people to be a kept hostage by the International Community for Somalia. Under the international law Somaliland people decided for their future and regained their freedom they rejected 64 years ago and they have all the right to do so. Without recognition Somaliland will not receive the badly needed international development aid and investment and this international injustice and embargo is tantamount to Global Apartheid against Somaliland people. A Call for Action: We call upon the international community, the UN, and the AU to take decisive action to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. There is no international convention or law that contradicts Somaliland’s right to statehood. In fact, recognition would empower Somaliland to engage fully in international dialogue, ensuring that its citizens can enjoy their human rights and contribute to regional stability. Why Somaliland Deserves Recognition: Historical Context: Somaliland declared independence in 1991 following a brutal civil war, establishing a stable and democratic governance model that contrasts starkly with the ongoing turmoil in the region. Commitment to Democracy: Somaliland has held multiple democratic elections, showcasing its commitment to democratic principles and the rule of law. Last month on 13th November a peaceful election was held in Somaliland in which Somaliland people freely elected the 6th President of Somaliland H.E Dr Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi, who was the candidate for Wadani Party, the main opposition party. The incumbent President H.E Muse Beehi Abdi concealed defeat with dignity and on this Thursday 12th December the presidential inauguration will take place. Peace and Stability: Recognizing Somaliland would not only affirm the rights of its people but also contribute to peace and stability in the Horn of Africa. Human Rights Advocacy: Somaliland has demonstrated a commitment to human rights, often serving as a model for governance and civil liberties in a region plagued by conflict. Conclusion: On this International Day of Human Rights, we urge the international community to respect the human rights of all individuals, including those in Somaliland. We call for the recognition of Somaliland as an independent state to ensure that its citizens can fully enjoy their rights and freedoms. The time for action is now; let us stand together to uphold human rights for all mankind. The case of Somaliland should remind the freedom loving countries to appreciate and value the democracy and equality that they strive for and have striven for over decades. Peaceful and freedom loving Somaliland people deserve no less!
