Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The former President of the Federal Republic of Somalia and the chairman of Himilo Qaran, a political party, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, denounced the arrest warrant issued by Banadir Regional Court against the President of Jubaland State, Ahmed Mohamed Islam.

“It is illegal to issue an arrest warrant against the President of a Federal Member State and send troops to Jubaland. Such a decision can result in civil war,” said Sharif, who held a press conference at his headquarters in Mogadishu on Saturday. The former President defended the electoral autonomy of Jubaland State and congratulated the incumbent Jubaland president for winning the presidential election held in Kismaayo last week.

Sharif called for a transparent investigation into the case of Hassan Abdi Ismail, a Federal MP from Jubaland, who has been accused of assaulting a police officer on the premises of the Lower House. Several ministers and MPs visited the police officer in hospital, in what one politician described “as an attempt to politicise the incident at the parliament headquarters in Mogadishu”. Hassan opposed the Federal Government of Somalia’s “hostility towards Jubaland” and the total control of the bicameral legislature by Villa Somalia, the presidency in Mogadishu.

The Federal Government of Somalia sent contingents of troops to Ras Kambooni in Jubaland to overthrow Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, who rejected the unilateral move by Villa Somalia to hold a “one person, one vote” elections without political consensus across Somalia. Sharif Ahmed called for a consensus on the presidential elections for 2026
