Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — The Federal Government of Somalia yesterday reportedly committed to repatriating Somali asylum seekers currently in Mayotte, a French overseas territory in the Indian Ocean, and in mainland France as part of a cooperation agreement signed yesterday in Paris by Ali Omar, the State Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Thani Mohamed-Soilihi, the French State Minister for Francophonie and International Partnerships.

In return for agreeing to repatriate failed asylum seekers from Somalia, the Federal Government of Somalia will receive a substantial but undisclosed sum of money from France. The two-part repatriation programme will begin in Mayotte. “Human rights lawyers in Paris will not be able to challenge repatriation or deportation decisions by the French courts if the Mayotte plan succeeds,” said a lawyer in Paris.

The Federal Government of Somalia has also expressed interest in collaborating with several Western countries to facilitate the return of asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected after appeals.
