Democracy, rule of law, bureaucratic efficiency and visionary leadership are the hallmarks of good governance. The concept of governance can be traced to ancient Greek etymological thought, where the term was derived from the Latin verb "to steer." At the same time, in the 12th century, the English adopted it from the French term "gouvernance."
