Puntland challenges & rewards

August 2009 was meant to be the month of celebration and reflection for the Somali’s who hail from Puntland state. It was after all the 11th anniversary of the state creation and the celebration came at a time when Puntland gained a great deal of attention from the international community for its smooth transfer of power and for the pirate issue which is can only solve.

However the month of August has been a dark one and has highlighted Puntland’s biggest problem, lack of security in its southern border and the important city of Galkacyu. This is a historical issue, and the current government inherited a much neglected city awash with guns and sub clan rivalry.

Faroole has been in power for half a year and thus far has moved to transform the state administration; he has set up a competent cabinet as well as transformed the image of Puntland globally. The President has sent a top delegation that has unearthed a great deal of information regarding the core problems with the city. Since the murder of the minister the President has relocated to Galkacyu and started to revamp the cities admin.

Its important for President Faroole to continue his hard work, he will face many an obstacle down the road. We are dealing with manageable issues, corruption, crime and incompetence. These issues are faced by the worlds most advanced nations and thus its expected that Puntland would face such pains. Its no more than the birth pangs of a new state and Faroole is doing a great job.
