Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — A light aircraft touched down at Caabudwaaq Airport yesterday, after more than a week of suspended flights. Militias, based 45 km south of Caabudwaaq and armed with 36-calibre anti-aircraft guns, surfaced on social media, threatening to shoot down any aircraft travelling to or from Caabudwaaq. This was reportedly in response to weapons captured in the district several months ago.

Aircraft operators based in Mogadishu justified the temporary suspension of flights on grounds of passenger safety, but Caabudwaaq authorities hinted at possible political stratagems aimed at isolating the district and its inhabitants. The threat to the aircraft reminded many of similar tactics used by militias to keep Mogadishu Airport closed, until the Union of Islamic Courts reopened it following the defeat of warlords in 2006.

The Federal Aviation Ministry has not issued any statement regarding the risks posed to aircraft by militias in the southern parts of Galmudug.
