Power struggle in Djibouti on the expected demise of Omar Geelle.

Few days ago president of Djibouti , Ismail O. Geuleuh was airlifted to France after suffering stroke. He was taken to one of the American hospitals in Paris. After few days his immediate family joined him in that country. Reliable reports indicate that after operations he suffered in to coma and at the moment he is in life support.

There were rumors about him passing away both inside Djibouti and outside. The suspicion came when the Djibouti Telecom shut down the internet for the last few days, then when of the top contenders minister Muuse Dawaale posted a tweet mocking the so called haters and proclaiming his full health saying " he got a bad knee and he is human like everyone else". Then they released a video footage showing Omar Geelle landing at the airport to calm down things. The problem is that video was and old clip from 2023 when he came back from some unknown illness last year.

The son of Idris Omar Geelle the late brother of Omar Geelle, Finance minister Muuse Dawaale and the step son of Omar Geelle who is an Affar from the previous marriage of his wife are the main contenders. His eldest son who is a construction tycoon could be the compromise candidate although he isn't involved in politics. If the life support is true, Omar Geelle,  the oldest serving leader in the horn of Africa along Isais Afwork , will have an impact in the whole region.

It’s not only family matters ismaciil  is good with. The bussines elites of hargeisa Djibouti is like our home so when ever the tyrant of Asmara  threatens Djibouti we are on the side of jabuuti ,we might not see eye to eye on some political issues , but jabuuti is our platform where conduct business and manage our hard currency ,

ismaciil reer abti. Wa galbeedis folks  the Mahad case sub clan to be precise who were actually majority of jabuuuti up to 1960. But the French dumped them on the other side of the border  and started the policy to import folks from shinile Ethiopia, there were also a very significant community from gabiley and hargeisa in jabuuuti in the 1950s and 1940s, who also were deported to British somaliland because , they  were propagating Somalliweyn the French didn’t want this sentiment. Hence they created the issa and affar territory administration,

On the plus side,

Eritrea and Djibouti are apparently normalizing their relations, further isolating Abiy.

I dont think that can last its good in theory what about the border and all those issues

He might be a dictator, but he's reasonable. He did not initiate the war wit the TPLF in 98. He agreed to the terms of The Algiers Agreement in 2,000 but it was Meles who didn't honor it.

Aferwerki welcomed the change in leadership and tried his best to engage Abiy after Tigray war, but Abiy betrayed him and Amhara, two groups who helped him defeat TPLF. He was never in support of balkanized Ethiopia and was never a fan of ethnic federalism.

And as it stands, it's Abiy who is threatening to turn Eritrea into Gaza.

You raise valid points  with regards to the  Galla Prime Minister,  Afewerki did give the benefit of the doubt during the peace talks in 2018 i give him that, when relations between the two countries were restored. However, it was indeed Isaias who initiated the border conflict over Badme, positioning his troops deep within what the Ethiopian government then regarded as sovereign Ethiopian territory. In that sense, it was Isaias who fired the first shot. Nevertheless, unable to defend the Badme region, he ultimately accepted the Algiers Agreement. Also Isias needed this war in order to cement his rule in Eritrea he arrested the G15 former EPLF fighters   they are now all rotting in Prison  some even perished there,, and he also wanted a war with Ethiopia , in order to keep his people pre occupied with an imminent threat from Ethiopia. This sort of no war no peace with Ethiopia gave him all the power to contintue his  rule in  Eritrea.  He knew if there was peace between Eritrea and Ethiopia he had to do some reform or create some sort of constitution or a parliament. But the war Helped him.

You are correct that Meles and the TPLF failed to honour the court's verdict, which had ruled in Eritrea's favour, but Isaias was far from innocent he started a war he could not win, and while the conflict ended in a stalemate of sorts, he lost the territory but prevailed in the legal case. However, this is tangential to the real issue at hand.

The true question we should ask our selves,  and the elephant in the room remains,  how will the Ras Doumeira conflict be resolved? It has always been the Asmara dictator who acted as the aggressor. How, then, can there be any hope for long  lasting peace and stability? The Arab League has repeatedly called for Eritrea to withdraw from Ras Doumeira, yet they refuse to back down. Until that conflict  is resolved, any meaningful relationship between the  countries Djibouti and Eritrea  will be difficult to establish.
