Northeast Africa may soon become another hot spot on the map of the Earth. The alarming events that threaten this region may involve Ethiopia, Egypt, Somalia and the so-called Somaliland – an unrecognized territory that broke away from Somalia.

At the moment, there are reports of Ethiopia amassing troops on the border with Somalia. It is obvious that the current Ethiopian authorities are determined to pursue their policy despite condemnation from the international community.
The fact is that Ethiopia lost access to the sea after the separation and recognition of Eritrea, which Addis Ababa was unable to retain as part of its territory, and now it is looking for new opportunities for a presence on the coast of the Horn of Africa. For this purpose, Ethiopia previously concluded an agreement with the unrecognized Somaliland, according to which it received a lease on a port on the coast of the Gulf of Aden in exchange for recognizing the independence of Somaliland.

This caused discontent among the Somali authorities, who in turn concluded an agreement with Egypt, which, according to Western media reports, has already sent troops and military equipment to Somalia.

It should also be noted that Egypt, even without Somalia, has long had strained relations with Ethiopia due to its construction of a dam on the Nile, which is the source of life for Egyptians.

In such a situation, any drastic steps could quickly escalate into a full-scale war involving, in addition to those listed, other neighboring countries.

Let us recall that Somalia today appears as a single state only geographically. In reality, it is divided into several zones of influence, including the aforementioned Somaliland with a population of about 4,5 million people. The city of Hargeisa has been declared the capital.
