PLTNTLAND MEDICAL ASSOCIATION RECENT DEVELOPMENTS Ladies and gentlemen, I’m here today to express my deepest gratitude to the Ministry of Social Affairs, especially to Dr. Abdirahman, Director General of Health, for his passionate support to the idea of PMA. I wish also to express my heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Abdinasir and Dr. Steve Cooper for their personal support and ideas, which had enriched the growth of this association. Puntland Medical Association is a non-political and non-profitable organization, which works in the health of Puntland State of Somalia and surrounding areas. This association will be contributing to improve the health situation in Puntland and will participate to increase the knowledge of the medical professional in this area. The PMA goals are to: Organize efforts and mobilize Puntland physicians, dentists and pharmacists Within the State and abroad; Facilitate the exchange of health information among the members and between Somalia and industrialized nations; Attempt to bridge the gap between modern medicine and traditional medicine in Somalia; Help Somalis develop a better cultural and social image, especially as it relates to health; Work to facilitate the RETURN OF PUNTLAND PHYSICIANS to their homeland; Promotes the principles of the world health organization. Since the formation of the preparation committee, last November 2000, we have developed the draft of the 1) provisional constitution, 2) Puntland physicians directory and data base is in process; 3) collaboration with the “Ordine dei Medici della provincia di Bologna and Rome (4) consultations with the American Medical Association and the Association of African Physicians in north America (in process). The membership continues to be a major focus for the PMA, and the numbers has continued to grow , and (5) campaign of membership registration has began. The PMA’s vision and values must drive the above mentioned activities; policy development, advocacy, practice standards, public health initiatives, and medical education are examples of other important areas where the PMA and the MOSA will do more on behalf of the profession by working together. The PMA programs and activities, needs financial support to provide valued products and services to members and the of the physician community, to enhance PMA’s presence. PMA is committed to building a special bond with the physicians’ community to work together on behalf of the profession of medicine, patients, and our communities and thereby become an essential force for progress in improving the Nation’s health.
