unknown1 Posted August 12, 2008 GALKAYO, Somalia Aug 12 (Garowe Online) - The Somali army's commander in the central regions, Abdullahi "Afgub" Ardaf, was killed in the town of Galkayo last night, sources tell Garowe Online. Three men armed with pistols shot and killed the army commander at around 7:40pm local time Monday, with residents in south Galkayo confirming that the killers escaped. Police forces in north Galkayo, which is controlled by the Puntland regional authority, have been placed on high alert and the town's nighttime curfew is being "strictly enforced," according to locals. Galkayo has been the scene of numerous attacks in recent weeks, including deadly shootings and explosions targeting well-known community elders and businessmen. No group has claimed responsiblity for the killing yet, but Islamist insurgents have killed many Somali government officials since a bloody, anti-Ethiopia insurgency erupted in early 2007.
