Mogadishu (PP News Desk) — Dini Mohamed Dini, the former Chairman of Somali Civil Society Organisations, today challenged the groups campaigning for federal status for Mogadishu over their claim that the city belongs to certain social groups. “The very group claiming to seek federal status for Mogadishu has undermined this effort by failing to represent Somalis from different parts of the country. Mogadishu is the capital city of Somalia,” said Dini.

Mr. Dini reminded people how Mogadishu’s districts were originally planned in a socially inclusive manner. “It’s a different matter if the quest for federal status is based on how clans currently reside in districts. Anyone familiar with pre-war Mogadishu knows that all social amenities, such as parks, were sold to businesses,” added Mr. Dini.

Mogadishu continues to bear the physical and social scars of the Somali civil wars that raged through the city in the 1990s. The capital was divided into northern and southern halves, with different clan groups controlling various districts.
