Garowe (PP News Desk) — The Puntland Electoral Commission has officially declared the conclusion of local government elections in Garowe, Gadobjiiraan, and Dangaroyo. Voting stations closed at 6:00 PM East Africa Time. The PEC is expected to publish preliminary results of the elections soon.

Voting began at 6:00 AM today at 81 voting stations. A total of 431 candidates from eight political parties are contesting 81 local government seats. “The journey [of the democratic] process has not been easy. Be patient with the sun, winds and thirst. You are exercising your right to vote and elect councillors,” wrote President of Puntland State of Somalia, Said Abdullahi Deni, in a short message posted on the X (formerly Twitter) platform. President Deni voted in Qardho last year during the second phase of local government elections.

Earlier today, Puntland Vice President Ilyas Osman Lugator cast his vote at a voting station in Ilays School in Garowe. Election observers praised the conduct of the third phase of local government elections in Puntland State of Somalia. The process was noted for its organisation and adherence to democratic principles, reflecting the commitment of Somalia’s citizens to their electoral rights.
