Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — The Somaliland Administration TV posted in its Facebook page photos of new recruits being sent to Ethiopia for military training despite a defence pact signed between Ethiopia and Somalia in December 2023 in place. Ethiopia appears to be pursuing destabilising action after Somalia designated secession as a national security threat. In January 2024, Ethiopia and Somaliland Administration signed an illegal maritime Memorandum of Understanding in violation of Somalia’s sovereignty.

Political analysts in Hargeisa warn that Somaliland plans to deploy trained militias to Lughaya and Bullahaar, suggesting Ethiopia could build a port under the guise of a naval base, violating international law. “This could lead to Somaliland being blacklisted under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, meant to address global security threats from terrorist groups in Somalia” said an analyst in Hargeisa.

Somaliland’s President Muse Bihi recently threatened retaliation against Djibouti, accusing it of supporting opposition politicians from Awdal. The region is on the brink of further conflict as international eyes remain focused on Ukraine.
