Somalia’s (eternal) election conundrum: time for a realistic assessment

In June 2023, I had the privilege of joining a select group of intellectuals at Villa Somalia for a crucial discussion with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. This meeting came on the heels of a controversial National Consultative Council (NCC) agreement on Somalia’s election future, which proposed significant changes including a shift to a presidential system, limiting political parties to two, and setting ambitious timelines for local council elections.
