If a regional war indeed ignites it could plunge Eritrea in to a civil war, as 33 years of authoritarian rule has deeply divided its people. Afewerki should better start reforming his country and loosen the tight belt.

Honestly, no one knows. The man is impulsive and short-sighted. The only things are definitive about him are his thirst for war and unwillingness to listen to good counsel. 

But in general, Ethiopian administrations and elites prefer Asseb Port. It is closer, historically 'theirs' and is populated by Afars, a more friendly group than less reckless and unpredictable Somalis. 

The rumor is he wants to start the war sometime in the fall when the US is busy with elections much like he did with Tigray war which started November, 2020.

Why do authoritarians always use ‘war’ against so called ‘enemies’ to incite ‘nationalism’, when their intention is holding on to power far beyond their expiration dates? 

And why do the masses always fall for this and are blinded to see the basic facts and futility of it all?

It isn’t historically theirs. They had a brief  period of time they held during the Ethiopia occupation of eritrea but they have legal or any sort of historic claim over it Ethiopië is land locked
