These guys si fiican ayey ubarteen dadkeena ma istiri. ----- United Nations Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) For Immediate Release PRESS RELEASE 017/2008 UN Special Representative praises progress on Djibouti Agreement Nairobi, 16 July 2008 – The UN Special Representative for Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah has praised the Somali Parties for working quickly to advance the Djibouti Agreement of 9 June 2008. “The progress made so far has been encouraging,’ said Mr Ould-Abdallah. “ A month ago, Somali leaders from different backgrounds, made a courageous step forward to restoring the dignity of their wounded country.” He said the Somali leadership was not working alone. Their major regional and international partners, including Permanent Members of the Security Council, had witnessed the decisive moment in Djibouti. The international community, in particular the European Union, Norway and the US, has already mobilized significant resources for the implementation of the Agreement. The period since the signing has allowed Somalis to prepare for the new challenges ahead and to give all those still uncomfortable with the idea of a reborn Somalia, time to adjust The SRSG said that the UN Security Council would meet to discuss Somalia shortly. He also expressed the hope that a joint Somali delegation would undertake a mission to the Security Council and meet the Jaliyadda (Diaspora) in the US and in other countries. “After 18 years of armed confrontation that has evolved from a political struggle to a conflict between and among tribes, there is now hope that we will see the dawning of a new era. The path towards Somalia regaining its dignity and sovereignty is irreversible. “As peace calls for courage, patriotism and firm determination, it always has many enemies. Over the past two decades, countless Somalis have met brutal deaths, others went into exile or became refugees in their own country. The rest of the population is trapped and the business community’s enormous potential is not fully utilized. “The senseless killing of innocent Somalis must be condemned. The murder of businessmen such as Abbas Mohamed Dualeh or Haji Abdikarim Sheikh Ibrahim, of aid workers such as the head of the UNDP Mogadishu office Osman Ali Ahmed, of those like Ahmed Saalim who drove food convoys, and of journalists such as Nasteh Dahir Farah, is unacceptable. This year, many Somalis from all walks of life have been gunned down by Somalis. Those who train and arm adolescents to kill their compatriots will be brought to account. They will respond before God and will also face justice on earth. Such crimes will never go unpunished. “Today is a critical moment in Somalia’s history. The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union for Somalia (SRCC), Mr Nicolas Bwakira, undertook a working visit to Mogadishu, Somalia, on 13 and 14 July 2008. The main objectives of the visit were to: Review the political, security and humanitarian situation on the ground; Reaffirm to the Transitional Federal Government and to the people of Somalia, the African Union’s support for the Djibouti Agreement implementation; Express AU’s support and solidarity to the people of Somalia following the recent targeted assassinations of innocent humanitarian workers, and to strongly condemn these barbaric and terrorist acts; Meet AMISOM forces on the ground and review priorities and challenges. On the political front, the SRCC had the opportunity to consult with H.E.President Abdulahi Yussuf with whom he had a working session. The President of Somalia reaffirmed TFG readiness to implement the Djibouti Agreement. The President also expressed his hope that the Security Council will decide to deploy UN Peace Keeping Forces when it meets on 23rd July 2008 in New York. He further requested the African Union to provide its support in the implementation of the Djibouti Agreement. He took the opportunity to commend AMISOM troops for their performance and achievement in security, stabilization of the situation and humanitarian work in Mogadishu, which are very much appreciated by both the Government and the people of Somalia. On the security front, the SRCC reviewed the security challenges and measures required to address those challenges. On the humanitarian front, both the government and the African Union share the view that the humanitarian situation requires the continued mobilization of the international community in order to meet the needs of IDPs. It was also an opportunity to condemn acts of terrorism against humanitarian workers and the need for the perpetrators to be brought to book. During his working visit in Mogadishu, the SRCC had discussions with the Force Commander, his deputy, senior officers and the troops to review the different aspects of their work including the challenges they faced. At the end of his visit and within the framework of its mandate, newly trained Somali forces were commissioned by the SRCC and the Force Commander in the presence of the Acting Prime Minister, Mohamed Abdi Salaan. The message of the SRCC to these newly trained forces was the paramount need to strictly respect the human rights of the Somali population and above all their right to life. Mogadishu, 14 July 2008.
