Xudeedi Posted July 30, 2007 Troops loyal to the Puntland attempted to penetrate deep into places like Buraan in Sanaag for illegal production of charcoal. They machine-gunned one elderly nomad near the area after questioning who they were because of local awareness of environmental degradation raised by efforts of community initiatives and International NGOs. The elderly nomad, riddled with bullets and bleeding profusely, was taken to a hospital in Dhahar and was reported to be in life-threatening condition. Then, a Committee of elders along with the officials from the regional administration(Currently set up and named after the historic name of the region MAKHIR met and decided to immediately intervene by sending peace delegates and local troops served as on guard. They were again fired back from a distant sight without getting to heed the white flags raised by the elders. As a result, four of the Intruders from the outlaying settlements of Bari were killed on the scene and one technical was captured from them. Now the situation is intense and is on the brink of another clash for the simple reason that there are circulating reports that the defeated intruders are embarking on a retaliatory comeback. Despite the fact that there had been lobbying and advocacy efforts against the charcoal trade, the militia of Puntland, now self-clustered based on clan affiliation, are engaged in large number charcoal production and trade as a source of income for their livelihoods. Naxar Nugaaleed Posted July 30, 2007 maakhirow, should you not worry that cerigaabo has become a stronghold for the secessionist instead of being obsessed with spreading negative news about puntland? Elders of Sanaag or maakhir not only joined but spear headed the formation of the state of puntland to form a united front against sland. considering what recently happened in dhahar, can you really be under the illusion that that threat no longer exists? Our correspondent, Mohomoud Iyoun, in the area said the gun battle started after a group of militiamen working as vigilantes intercepted another group of militias who have been engaged in deforesting the environment lately. “The dead body of one of the deforesters was brought to the town while one of trees protectors was wounded during the fighting that lasted in thirty minutes,” he said. Iyoun also reported that one cargo truck full of logs and charcoal was seized by the vigilantes who opposed the illegallogging in their settlement of Dahar. He said a man who was recognized as a soldier from Puntland, the semiautonomous province, in northeast Somalia was among several illegal loggers caught by the vigilantes. The situation was reportedly tense as residents were very much concerned about renewed fighting in their peaceful region.
