Somalia Campaign (resources for a PR campaign)

Recommended Posts

Paragon

Brothers and Sisters, time has come to be active in spreading the word. Our nation is subject to genocide, rape and displacement. The dead are rotting on our streets YET the international community and media has consciously decided to keep our plight in the shadow. Most of the Western governments have financed the carnage we are being subjected to, by providing funds for Ethiopia and the TFG and almost all the Western public, who elect these governments, are kept in the dark or are misinformed.

The biggest culprit in the UK regarding the reporting the carnage in Mogadishu is the British Broadcasting Coorporation which has most of the time failed in its duty to educate the public of what is happening in Mogadishu, Somalia. Over 320 thousands fleeing, over 1500 people killed and over 3000 wounded and maimed, the BBC has said little as possible.The same is the case with major other media sources.

It is worthwhile to note that only Aljazeera has covered this war as it should be. We thank Aljazeera for its good work.

Now below is all the top media and publishing companies in the UK. I will also post all important contact needed for a successful PR campaign. Write to these contacts please, as many times as possible. I am hoping that in this topic, we would all work on the preparation of the emails and letters that should be sent to these contacts. We could discuss what their contacts would be. In the meantime, good luck posting

Let me start with UK contact details.

The Press Complaints Commission.

The Press Complaints Commission is an independent body which deals with complaints from members of the public about the editorial content of newspapers and magazines. Our service to the public is free, quick and easy. We aim to deal with most complaints in just 32 working days - and there is absolutely no cost to the people complaining.

The PCC received 3,649 complaints in 2003. Of the complaints that were specified under the terms of the Code of Practice approximately four out of ten were about accuracy in reporting and approximately one in three related to intrusion into privacy of some sort. All complaints are investigated under the editors' Code of Practice, which binds all national and regional newspapers and magazines. The Code - drawn up by editors themselves - covers the way in which news is gathered and reported. It also provides special protection to particularly vulnerable groups of people such as children, hospital patients and those at risk of discrimination.

Our main aim with any complaint which raises a possible breach of the Code of Practice is always to resolve it as quickly as possible. Because of our success in this, the Commission had to adjudicate on only 23 complaints in 2003 - the lowest ever number. That is a sign not of the weakness of self regulation - but its strength. All those which were critical of a newspaper were published in full and with due prominence by the publication concerned.

As well as dealing with complaints, the PCC deals with a substantial number of calls from members of the public about our service and about the Code. In 2003 we dealt with approximately 8,550 enquiries by telephone, fax and email. This is an encouraging sign of the accessibility of the Commission to members of the public.

The success of the PCC continues to underline the strength of effective and independent self regulation over any form of legal or statutory control. Legal controls would be useless to those members of the public who could not afford legal action - and would mean protracted delays before complainants received redress. In our system of self regulation, effective redress is free and quick.

^^Xanthus, good advice and thank you very much. I will look forward to reading your e-mails Xanthus.

TV or Radio Programme Complaints

Always consider contacting the broadcaster first. This gives them an opportunity to respond.

We can consider the following programme complaints:

* Whether an item was not impartial

* Whether an item was accurate

* Whether an item was offensive or harmful; and

* Whether an item was fair or affected anyone's privacy

Programmes broadcast by the BBC and SC4 – we can consider issues relating to:

* Fairness and privacy; and

* Harm and offence

Sponsorship – we can consider:

* the credit given to any company sponsoring an item; and

* issues about any commercial influence in programmes

Express your views or make a complaint

If you have a concern or issue with something broadcast on television or radio (except advertisements, now handled by the ASA), the procedure for resolving it is outlined here.

1. Express your views

If you wish to let us know your views, positive or negative, please submit details to the Ofcom Contact Centre. We will note your views which will be circulated to key Ofcom staff who receive a daily report on the concerns we receive from viewers and listeners.

2. Broadcast Complaints

If you consider that a specific television or radio programme was harmful, offensive, misleading, or raised an issue of impartiality, accuracy or contained inappropriate commercial activities please contact the Ofcom Contact Centre. We will review the matter and let you know the outcome.
