Ms DD Posted April 24, 2007 Ethiopia attack 'leaves 74 dead' Gunmen have killed at least 74 people in an attack on an oil field in Ethiopia's remote Somali region, the Ethiopian government says. Sixty-five Ethiopians and nine Chinese oil workers were killed in the incident early on Tuesday, an adviser to the prime minister told the BBC. Besides those killed, seven Chinese workers were taken captive, he said. A spokesman for the separatist group, the ****** National Liberation Front, said it had launched the attack. The clashes took place at an oil field in Abole, a small town about 120km (75 miles) from the regional capital, Jijiga. "We have warned the Chinese government and the Ethiopian government that... they don't have a right to drill there," an ONLF spokesman in London, Abdirahman Mahdihe, told the BBC's Focus on Africa programme. "Unfortunately nobody heeds our warning and we have to defend our territorial integrity," he said. Berekat Simon, an adviser to Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, said the attack was "a cold blood killing, a massacre. It is a terrorist act." Fire fight A Chinese oil worker said about 200 gunmen attacked the field. The workers were employed by the Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau, part of China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation, China's Xinhua news agency reported. Gunmen briefly took control of the field after a 50-minute fire fight with soldiers protecting it, Xu Shuang, a manager for the oil group, told the agency. In recent years, China has been working to increase its influence and investment in Africa as it looks to secure energy supplies for the future. The Somali region - known locally as the ****** - is known for its often violent clan politics, the BBC's Amber Henshaw reports from Addis Ababa. The ONLF has in the past made threats against foreign companies working with the Ethiopian government to exploit the region's natural resources. The ONLF has been waging a low-level insurgency with the aim of breaking away from Ethiopia. The incident will also step up tensions in the region which borders Somalia - where there are often clashes between Ethiopian troops and Islamists, our correspondent adds. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/6588055.stm
Paragon Posted April 24, 2007 The ONLF has been warning the Chinese firm to stop drilling oil wells in the region. Their stay was illegal and this attack shows the anger of the locals. This is a Somali land and not Ethiopian. The sooner the foreign investors get that through their thick skull the better for them.

Castro Posted April 24, 2007 And now the Somalis in the Oggadeen region will be bombed from the air and shelled from the ground like their counterparts in Muqdisho. This is just more money from the Americans in Meles' pocket. Allow sahal. Edit: And why on earth attack non-combatants?

Paragon Posted April 24, 2007 ^^I think that was the whole point, NAA. To make them think twice. Unlike Nigeria where workers are taken hostage and released, here they are killed. A clear message.

me Posted April 24, 2007 BTW, the whole predictions that the whole region would be engulfed by wars is coming true. Kenya wey liiq liiqanaysaa Soomaaliya koonfur iyo waqooyi ta socota waan aragnaa. Eriteria maraykan ayaa u hanjabaya. Ethiopia sheekadu wey ku sii kululaanaysaa. Lets invest in boats, xabashi badan oo qaxaysa ayaan maalin dhow arkaynaa. QabiilDiid Posted April 24, 2007 Where is Duke? Is he not supposed to wail with his master, Zenawi (ha la baroote eh)? Mr. Zewani has described this skirmish as a massacre. BTW, 74 is not the right number. 150 Tigrean soldiers died in the battle while only 2 mujaahids martyred. Listen to BBC Somali and the interview given by the Mr. Mahdi from ONLF.
