Ethiopia has issued a resolute rejection of the #Arab_League’s statement following an extraordinary meeting on 17 January, 2023, regarding the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and Somaliland. Ambassador Mesganu Arega, the State Minister of the Ethiopian Foreign Affairs Ministry, labeled the League’s statement as an “attempt to interfere with the internal affairs and sovereignty of Ethiopia.”

Ambassador Meles Alem, spokesperson for the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, deemed the Arab League’s statement “unacceptable,” asserting Ethiopia’s rejection of it. He emphasized that Africans have the capability to solve their own problems and criticized #Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry for portraying Ethiopia as a destabilizer, stating it is irresponsible and aimed at escalating the situation.

The Arab League Ministerial Council supported #Somalia in its resolution and condemned Ethiopia’s actions, accusing it of destabilizing security and threatening regional peace. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry called for respecting Somalia’s sovereignty, while Khalifa Shaheen Almarar of the #UAE emphasized support for Somalia and urged de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.
