Ethiopia has established a full embassy in unrecognised Somaliland

Ethiopia has upgraded the status of its diplomatic mission in Hargeisa, the capital of the unrecognised republic of Somaliland. It is now an embassy instead of a consulate, the Somaliland Ministry of Information, Culture and National Administration said on social network X .

The post claims that the implementation process of the memorandum of understanding between the unrecognised republic and Ethiopia is at an advanced stage.

The Minister of Information, Culture and National Development Ali Hassan Mohamed in an interview with BBC Somali service emphasised that the upgrading of Ethiopia’s representation in Somaliland is credible information.

The official noted that the Somali government in Mogadishu has no influence on Somaliland.

In Mogadishu, the breakaway territory’s moves towards independence are painfully perceived. The separatism theme came to a head when Ethiopia struck a maritime deal with Somaliland to use Berbera port for trade and military purposes. In exchange, Addis Ababa must recognise its partner’s independence. The agreement worsened Somalia’s complex relationship with Ethiopia.

Earlier , representatives of the British Parliament travelledto Somaliland and met with local lawmakers. The British and Africans noted the “deeply rooted relationship” between Hargeisa and London. The main item on the programme of discussions between the two parliamentarians was the aspirations of the Somaliland people for international recognition.

Amid years of war with jihadists, Somalia is unable to reclaim its breakaway regions. In early April 2024, the Somali federal government announced the closure of the Ethiopian consulate in the large state of Puntland. In response to the feds, the Puntland authorities said they had longstanding and close relations with Ethiopia and had no intention of changing that.

Safaarad kulahaa. Xabashada don't even call that. Saraakiil ciidan militari maxee ka qabanayaan safaarad ku sheega? Maxaa dalka Soomaaliya gumeysi Xabashi hoos galay.

And I see Cirro casharka loo dhigayaa already.

Dal meesha ma jiro.
