Forty Somali journalists participated in the competition, who were from print media, radio stations and television channels from many media houses in Somalia.

BBC media action announced the winners today, and Abdirahman Hayir an young aspiring journalist won the second position of visual storytelling. Hayir was part of the six winners of the competition who were announced by the agency today.

Abdirahman who won the visual storytelling category of the competition highlighted in his program the plight of internally displaced people who are facing the harsh effect of climate change which exacerbated their already fragile situation of poor living conditions.

The competition was part of an effort to sensitize Somali journalist on the disastrous impact of climate change in Somalia, and it comes at a time when large parts of the country are ravaged by floods which displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

The situation remains that many Somalis including journalists have heard about climate change and see its impact all the time in the form of prolonged drought and other times destructive floods, but still the awareness and understanding of is very low considering the magnitude of the impact of this crisis on the livelihood and development of the country.

The efforts of journalists like Abdirahman are exemplary in directing the attention of the communities on the impact of climate change which can contribute to increased understanding and improved resilience of the communities.
