Abiy Ahmed’s Strategic Ambitions: Ethiopia’s Determination for Port Access by any means

Since the PM of Federal Republic of Ethiopia Dr Abiy Ahmed announced that his country is exploring all options to secure a port for Ethiopia, either through negotiation, “give and take,” and/or “force”, his intention sharply increased the suspicion among littoral countries in the region. PM’s call to acquire sea access by force is a concerning proposition for the peace-loving people in the region. Resorting to aggression and military action is not only extreme but also unwise and irrational, particularly a region with a history of conflict in the better part of the recent memory. This was particularly true for Somalis, when PM Abiy vividly mentioned that one of the potential spots in which he wishes to seemingly annex is Saylac – Somalia. Instead of escalating tensions and jeopardizing the stability of the region, it would be far more productive to seek peaceful resolution.
