Xudeedi Posted September 18, 2010 September 17, 2010 BADHAN, (SPR) - The management board of University of Maakhir has put in place an effective Evaluations Plan for the academic year 2010-11. Mr. Zakariye S. Osman, a program director, told Somali Public Radio that his team had started a long trip across Sanaag Region to lead recruitment and to develop a strong relationship with the public. "Our admission criteria is very competitive. To create and ensure the quality of a higher learning institution, we are first planning to launch a 6 month intensive course of varied subjects like Math, English, Computer, and Biology to prepare the freshman students for the well-structured upper division courses," related Zakariye to our SPR correspondent in Badhan, Yasin Ali. The board of the school is convinced that the school will proceed with two undergraduate programs: Education and Computer of Information Science. It will then expand into other essential programs of study like Health, Business and Finance later on. The first branch of the University will soon be launched in Badhan, Sanaag. It is principally funded by the Diaspora and partially by international donors. Prof. Abdirahman Hersi from Atlanta, GA is the General Manager and a member of the faculty staff. Mr. Hersi was the dean of Lafole University when Somalia had a functioning government. His dissertation at U.C. Los Angeles on the Arab factor of Somali society is a well-cited topic of the history of Horn of Africa. Construction of the premises and research and library facilities for the University of Maakhir shall proceed in the six months process of student registrations and the intensive courses. The Public Awareness and Registration Director of the University of Maakhir, Mr. Zakariye S. Osman, urges the people of Sanaag and western Bari not to misread or underestimate the purpose of the institution, which aims to fill in this particular need of higher education in Sanaag. He calls upon the Diaspora to lend their moral and financial support. Mr. Zakariye hopes that the shortages of nurses, doctors, teachers, technicians and aspiring businessmen from the region will be reversed in the years to come. "Education is the key element to social progress and economic development and all that we have to do is give what we can as either family contribution or as per individual pledge. Either way, you are part of an innovative and dynamic change of attitude," said Zakariye in an interview with Somali Public Radio.
