Sheikh Atom receiving medical care in Badhan, Puntland accused of atrocities

Recommended Posts

ERIGAVO (Somalilandpress) — A former arms dealer and a warlord, who recently engaged an armed tribal war with Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland is said to be receiving medical care in one of the houses in the town of Badhan, in eastern Sanaag region.

Mohamed Saeed “Sheikh Atom” sustained a bullet injuries on his hip after forces loyal to Puntland President, Abdirahman Farole, a key sponsor of piracy, attacked his hideout in Galgala town in eastern Sanaag, some 120 kilometres east of Erigavo, the provincial capital.

Sheikh Atom was brought to the town by members of his ********** kinsmen, who are the main inhabitants of eastern Sanaag. The town of Badhan is divided between **********s who are loyal to Somaliland and the Puntland region of Somalia. The town geographically falls within Somaliland territory.

It is unclear which side of the town he is receiving the medical care but sources close to him told Hargeisa Star, a local newspaper, he was in the town for the past few days after traveling from Galgala for three days.

Local ********** tribes have accused Abdirahman Farole and his ********* clan of instigating tribal tensions in the region and playing the terrorism cards to draw funds from Western firms who want to exploit the region of important mineral deposits.

The Puntland regime has been arresting people who hail from eastern Sanaag and the Sool region in the past days accusing them of supporting the former arms dealer. On Sunday firing squads in the town of Bosaasso publicly executed two men from eastern Sanaag and Sool in front of a large crowd including media (see SOMALIA: Puntland executes two men accused of terrorism). Local reports stated over 100 people were killed while over 700 families are currently displaced in the Galgala region.

Last week large members of the ********** community in Kenya has been protesting about the Puntland invasion and the current conflict.

On Tuesday, Puntland police chief, Sayid Jama Abdi, who hails from the *********** clan of Sool region, officially resigned from his post in protest accusing the Puntland administration of committing atrocities against some of the minor tribes.

Farole administration has also looted the port of Las Qorey, taking a number of cranes and equipment to the town of Bosasso. The ********** Diaspora community who paid for the equipment have expressed outrage and confusion.

The Somaliland government has not so far commented on the report however Sheikh Atom has always been against Somaliland and insisted he beliefs in greater Somalia.

One can understand the frustration and anger emanating from the poorly-written SomalilandPress News articles. Being new to the politics and once occupying a stigmatic place in the history that Somali nation holds with high respect, they have to wail and howl in distress, make up stories and outright diatribes as though it will distract the security concern the world has against the likes of Gaboose and Irro.

The Galgala debacle was an armed expression of the public discontent with the current administration and its poor governance + previous clashes of resource conflict. With the exception of a few Garads, the bulk of Makhiri Garads + the most powerful Sultan endorsed the general public's view that it was important first to deal with Attam than with the admin's pathological governance. Both sides contained multi-clan members, though majority were from the people of western Bari region.

The International Crisis Group had already warned of the simmering problems long before the onset of the armed conflict. And it might assume a different face unless the root causes are attended.

The extreme pus of low self-esteem that oozes from the secessionists' public relations exercise is mindboggling. Why the distortion of the geographic size of the Sanaag (mainly inhabited by the Makhiris)? The distance from Erigavo to Bosaaso is over 250 KM and Galgala is very close to Bosaso, around 50-60 km and it's also part of the western Bari region, not Sanaag.

Beware, the Maakhiris are die-hard anti-secessionists. The historic defeat and humiliation of your warlord-cum defense minister attests to the position of the people of Sanaag region of N. Somalia vs the small Triangle

Ngonge, I guess I won this bet. Nassir and company will never pick the secessionists, history as proven this. They have flip-flopped from supporting Puntland to claiming that they dont for various reasons. But never once have they said they would join your enclave.

Why? Well again, unless your government stops one group from having a huge chunk of power and more importantly stop excluding others from Sool and Sanaag from running for the top job....they will never want to join you...nor can your officials visit.

^lol@Ngonge, we shall wait and see.

Thankful, you should know Bosaaso is a half Maakhiri territory,(thus the rivalry between Qardho, Waaciye and Dhahar folks) so I don't see the reason why Hargeisa is a desirable political option when a major port is within the confines of my own territory.

Btw, Sanaag is largely a pro-union group and that helps the strength of the clans of Puntland and by extension the restoration of the Somali republic.
