About 18 Somali journalists detained in Somaliland.

Mogadishu 14, Oct.06 ( Sh.M.Network) Authorities of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland (northwest Somalia) arrested about eighteen journalists from south and central regions of Somalia on their way to participate a workshop sponsored by both WHO and UNICEF organizations.

The police immigration department of Somaliland reported to have confiscated all the travel documents and passports, which the journalists had.

 

The authorities of the break away region of Somaliland have ordered all these journalists to remain for several hours in a compound where illegal immigrants kept.

 

According to Mohamed Amin Sheik Adow the deputy chairman of Radio Shabelle who is also among the arrested today in Somaliland capital Hargeysa the arrested journalists have yet to break their fast. “We were all fasting and no one has brought anything to us though the time of fast breaking passed byâ€, he said.

 

They took everything we had, we have told them that, WHO and UNICEF organizations based in the self-declared Republic of Somaliland invited us but they turned deaf ear, Amin said.

 

The Somaliland authorities have not yet spoken publicly about the arrest.

 

The other journalists have vowed not take part the workshop since they were not informed why they were arrested.

 

 

Meanwhile Reports from Haregesia say all the arrested journalists were now released.
