islam showed us the path, and gave women their rights, im not contesting that. i think what youre ignoring is that anti-female sentiment (for a lack of a better term) has existed prior islam, and is/was so strong than it still exists today. what happened in afghanistan during the taliban rule? those men tried to hide behing the facade of islam to justify their barbaric behaviour towards women, denying them their basic rights. there is another post here about honor killings in which even muslims participate in. somali women are enduring FGM, etc, etc. fgm, and honor killings are even condoned by women, why you ask? because the line of thinking that a woman is basically worthless without an intact hymen is passed on to the next generation whom all seem to think its islamic because its been a part of them before, during and after islam came into theire culture. believe me, feminism isnt a movement where were trying to make men obsolete. im not saying there arent radicals (i think theyre usually lesbians) who do want that, but i also think that feminism ( men and women looking out for other womens rights) would also fit in islam. imams dont do anything, they are also a products of their culture and history (those that believe in honor killings). how else will things change for women if people dont take a stand and stop it? thats what i think feminism is. whatever though. thanks for your concern about my soul.

if you think im wrong, so be it. but let me say a couple of things. feminism in a capital/kaffir country such as this takes on a different and yes, contradictory stance to islam. but like someone stated before many aspects of it fit into islam and for the most part we practice it.(i think you can be a muslim and a feminist.) i dont think the talibans did. im sure they started out with a great future in mind (why else would they call themselves talibans), but in the end they were tyrants at best. not just to women, but to all their people. i dont watch cnn, or abc. in fact,the only main stream news i watch anymore is the bbc, the rest i get from independant papers and the internet, and even than i have to sift through the authors left wing antics. im just saying, im not a yankees cap wearing, flag waving, *remember 911* american, or pro-american for that matter. i dont think iraq or afghanistan are "liberated", but im not sad to see their last "leaders" leave either, im more troubled by who's in charge now... anyways im straying off the topic. rapes were less frequent during the taliban rule? i can see that. i can also see women being raped and being charged for adultery cause "it was their fault in the first place for walking down the street alone".i can also see some taliban members themselves commiting such acts... but whatever.i could probably find some favorable facts for any dictator or tyrant saying how much things were better off during there rule too but,thats just my opinion though... which is wrong anyways.

I would like to add a thought. It is sad that in both traditional (patriarchal/religion based) and modern (atheist/western) societies woman are obviously exploited and subjected to fulfill the desires of men. This is a fact. Any movement that seeks to rectify this situation is worth commending.

 

 

I find it disappointing that some of the so called "victories" of feminists in the West have led to the whole sale sexual exploitation of woman in mass-media. This situation undermines much of the real victories that may have been produced by that movement in the area's of the status of woman under the law and in educational institutions.
