Ethiopia Installs Street Surviellance Cameras in Addis

Recommended Posts

The Information Network Security Agency (INSA) has been installing security cameras in the city since Monday, March 12, 2010, under contract with the Federal Police Commission.

The INSA is a governmental institution that works on software development, hardware programming, networking, and network security. It has so far completed installing cameras on both sides of the street along Africa Avenue from the Bole Ring Road Roun****ut to Olympia. The agency has installed cameras in places where there are intersections and feeder roads along the route.

The installation will extend to Menelik II Avenue and Niger and Taitu streets up until the Sheraton Addis, according to Abraham Belay, director of the Physical Security Directorate at the INSA.

Similar installations will take place in other places in Addis Abeba, according to him.

“The cameras are used to gather accurate information on traffic flow and to monitor traffic accidents,” Abraham said.

The first phase of implementation covers the route from Bole to Sheraton, because of the traffic density and importance of the road, according to the director.

The INSA imported 150 security cameras from China Video Surveillance Ltd, at a price which he declined to disclose.

The INSA was established in December 2006 to monitor acts of crime and terror against the country using international and national information communication network systems. The agency also aims to increase the country’s use of information and communication network technologies.

The agency, which is storing Addis Abeba’s land related information, is currently working on a real-time transport management system, which is a tracking device transport companies can use to monitor the movement of their vehicles in the field.
