Somali president visits Afgoye, towards Mogadishu

Somaliweyn Media Center (SMC) Somalia's transitional federal government president Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed ha made a emblematic visit to Afgoye district, some 30km south from the capital Mogadishu on saturday where he was met with a mix of cheers

The president is set to get to the capital Mogadishu urgently as aids told SMC, two days after his forces with Ethiopian troops kicked the powerful Islamists off.

Yusuf said he was mulling a return to Mogadishu. It would mark his first visit since 1978, after he fled as an enemy of the previous regime. "I will go soon," he said.” Why not? It's the capital’.

President Yusuf was met in Afgoye, 20 kilometes (12 miles) outside Mogadishu, by Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi, who drove in from the capital where he had made a triumphant entrance Friday after nine days of fighting; claiming total victory over rival Islamists and saying his Ethiopian military allies would stay there for as long as needed.

Yusuf flew in from Baidoa, seat of the country's weak transition government about 250 kilometres (155 miles) northwest of the capital, on board an Ethiopian military helicopter that set down at a military base on the outskirts of Afgoye.

The two leaders were reported to be in a meeting inside the aircraft, which was surrounded by soldiers.

On Friday in Baidoa, Yusuf defended his government's ability to lead the nation, but said the transitional government would need immediate help from the international community.

He said Somalia needed African Union peacekeepers until the government can rebuild a national army. Another top priority is providing services and assistance to the people, he added.

Mogadishu meanwhile was calm as this Muslim nation prepared to celebrate Saturday's start of the four-day day holy feast of Eid Al-Adha, or Feast of the Sacrifice.

The UN-recognized government, organized in 2004, has endured so much derision that many pundits and journalists routinely refer to it as "Somalia's weak transitional government," one government official recently complained, "as if 'weak' had somehow become part of the formal name."

After Islamists rose to power this summer, the transitional government appeared headed toward another failed attempt to install law and order since Somalia slipped into chaos and civil war in 1991.

Not many agree A/Y is legitimate somali president but a stooge and his rule a start of an oppressive short rule. Let us hope it doesn't end with violence or lasts longer than necessary. And I bet if I was a betting man that all standing behind him and around hail from his subclan. Typical of unpopular, fearful, warmongering men in somali politics. It is such a pity men like him have to hold leadership positions in our nation forced by foreign occupying power or not.

^^ You probably think the thousands who greeted Geedi are also from his sub-clan. Perhaps even his sub-sub clan? That's what you call a myopic and narrow-minded defeated court-tribalist.

Xoogsade, dear brother, I understand your pain, since those who you used to support have been thrashed out of the fertile south.

This is a great day, the first Eid since the early 1990s. The people of lower Shabbele are free. I heard Barawe has been liberated. No more clan courts or IndaCade gang.

A landmark moment.

Camir, Yes its the first time President Yey has been in Afgoyee since 1977..Historic indeed.

Actually,The invasion of the ethiopian army into somali soil is not defeat, but rather a take over of the entire SOMALI population. Those who welcome this invasion are traitors and a door knob govt. They have of course committed the highest act of treason and will be answerable to the somali people

History has that Yeey, the baby slayer, slaughter of kids, Habish prisoner, traitor has long time ago sold his soul to the devil long long time ago. Those who think, believe or otherwise wishing that he would steer Somalia away from a chaos and bring about a stable, and even a fairly secure Somali nation should just go back to the history books. There are those who stand up for the right, and then those who try to corrupt the right by any means. History is in motion, and whether you were Pro Indhacade, the thug of all thugs in Somalia, or with the guy who sold his iman and nation for few days of Jalle madaxweyne igu yare, I am sure the theatrical, cheap propaganda of a few who are clinically insane here will not alter the past and the history of adeer Yeey and the guy who looks like a vampire Geedi the evil dragon. Soomaali waa in istaqaan…and some of them can’t go to sleep without sucking a blood, human blood….These people committed a national Treason….Whether they pay the way Sadam and his cronies have paid it, or the exact hand of god strikes before we get to them, we are waiting, anticipating the beginning of the end…the final days of stooges and their masters…

Let us face it, most somalis don't share the enthusiasm A/Y's fellow "unprincipled" clansmen have. He comes to Muqdisho unwelcome, despised, protected by an Army of Amxaaro. It is a count down for this the traitor's death.

And I am not a brother to anyone who have been supporting the TFG, we have nothing in common.

Those thousands who greeted Geedi are possibly not from his sub-clan or sub-sub clan. They are probably those who show support for any winning horse.
