Meiji Posted August 17, 2009 Silly Siyaadist Propaganda. That video proves nothing, its a simple informative material for those with no knowledge about Somalia: Western audience. Those who have basic knowledge of Somalia and its history know how things really went. As for your information: - The old port of Mogadishu was built by the Italian adminstration. -The new port of Mogadishu was built during the SYL government rule. -The airport and port of Hargaisa were built before the SYL government, and were later expanded during the SYL government. - The port of Kismaanyo was built during 1960-1969, later expanded by UNISOM post-1991. -The airports were built before the coup. As for factories: The sugar factory in Jowhar was built before the coup, the meat factory in Kismaanyo before the coup, most of the factories in Mogadishu were built or under construction before the coup. What the military junta did was to claim the work of others. Most factories that were under construction during 1964-1969 were completed after 1970, and as a consequence the military junta lay claim to it, and took all credit. History is written, no silly propaganda from jaallesiyaad website can change what has been written by multiple academic and news sources.
Thankful Posted August 17, 2009 I provide you with a video, that show's the negative and positive aspects of Siads Regime, that mentions him as one of the principle people that sent Somalia into Anarchy. And you say that it is propaganda! But you are obviously unwilling to even hear anything. The video is proof of what was built in the 70s. As for your information: - The old port of Mogadishu was built by the Italian administration. I admit that, a lot of things were started 1960-69, but there is a reason it was never completed, people began infighting and complaining. Something as simple as what letters our language should be written in was fought over and couldn't be decided. Siad came and put and end to all of it, and made decisions and finished many things. You are mentioning the SYL and other movements. They were not independent our country was not in our control. We were basically slaves under the colonialists. The SYL did lead to our independence, but don't tell me things were build by Somalis back then. We were not in control. The only use for these facilities was to export our valuable resources to our colonialists and given nothing in return. You asked for proof and I provide a video, which you can find different parts to on youtube. Video's that show the good and bad of Siad, and your reply is that he did none of it and that the video is propaganda. Well that is ridiculous becaause propaganda would be all positive and no negative. Now you are claiming so many things were built pre-Siad, I ask you to show proof. Meiji Posted August 17, 2009 ^^ I never said that the military regime did none, I only pointed out to the crazy Propaganda that some spread and argue that he built 90% of the infrastructure of the country. In the 21 years of the military regime there was development, and most of that development was in the early days namely: 1969-1977. Also, many projects were started during 1960-1969 and some were finished with others been delayed due to the mismanagment going on in the SYL government. The military regime had a military method of tackling problems, which explains the decesiveness and discpline with which the projects were completed. But to give credit solely to the military regime is telling a half-story.
Meiji Posted August 17, 2009 As for pre-Siad era, The SYL government launched a 5 year development plan in 1963, and a 2 year short-term development plan. In the first 5 year plan: - 7% of total planned expenditure to development of the livestock sector (very low figure considering the fact that above 80% of Somali people are dependent on the livestock sector for their livelihoods but the government placed its focus on manufacturing and trade) - New research projects, well defined program aiming at improvement of animal husbandry and sedentarisation of nomads. - In the pastoral sector, the Livestock Development Agency was formed in 1965-66 - Provision of water and veterinary services, and adequate marketing facilities and transportation services to increase tradable fraction of herds. - Development of large areas of land for agricultural production (large state farms at Tugwajaleh and Jilib) - Increase of sugar output through expansion of productive capacity of Jowhar sugar factory. - Development of meat packing, fish processing, milk and dairy products, textiles and a few other industries. - Construction and improvement of a number of roads - Building three seaports at Kismanyo, Berbera, and Mogadishu. To make up for delays in implementation, Government launches in 1968 a two-year Short-Term Development Programme. Which is: ''the consolidation of the work of the First Five-Year Plan and the creation of basic conditions necessary for the formulation and implementation of future development programmes of a more ambitious nature'' Also, the most important achievement of the first civilian government was the creation and modernization of the first Somali army. the first civilian government achieved to get a grant from the Soviet Union of $32 million, to modernize the Somali army and expand it to 14.000 personnal. This grant was later increased to $55 million. Besides this the Soviet Union also provided Somalia during the 60s with a substantial number of T-34 tanks, armored personnel carriers, MiG-15 and MiG-17 aircraft, small arms, and ammunition. Approximately 300 Soviet military advisers deployed to Somalia to train the army, and about 500 Somali pilots, officers, and technicians received training in the Soviet Union. (see Library of Congress, country study: Somalia) Eventually the institution (army and police) that the first civilian government created and modernized to defend the nation from Ethiopian aggression seized power. Conclusion: I am not argueing here that the military regime did nothing for Somalia, since that would be an obvious lie and distortion of history. Afterall, the military regime ruled the country for 21 years and had popular support in its first decade. In this first decade there was development and progress under the rule of the military junta. What I am discussing are the blatant lies spread by Siyaadists in which they want to create a fairytale history of ''Jaalle Siyaad'' building Somalia from scratch and been the benevolent leader that modernized Somalia. In this Propaganda campaign, they spread all kinds of lies like for example: ''he built 90% of all infrastructure, he built most mosques etc etc.''. As long as propagandists spread their lies to distort and change the dark legacy Siad Barre left, I will present the other side of the story and tackle misinformation spread by these propagandists. Cumar Posted August 17, 2009 Meiji has taken the "my words are right, your evidence, no matter how rich it is, is automatically false" approach Meiji, if we had to rely on your unreferenced words, than you might have a point but the world the doesn't work that way. I mean, you can hole up the hatred you have for him which is grounded on clannism but one cannot deny his achievements. As Jonathan Stevenson commented on the achievements of the previous Somali government: When Siad Barre took over, Somalia's population was three-quarters nomadic and largely illiterate. Nationalization of agricultural industries focused and coordinated production, crowded out sleazy and inefficient middlemen, and nurtured foreign trade. Through largely inspirational government self-help programs Somalis built an operating health and education infrastructure from the ground up and inched Somalia in to the twentieth century. In 1973, Siad instituted Somalia’s first written language (a hybrid of indigenous argots and Arabic) and promptly brought literacy in Somalia up to a level that was in fact exemplary for the Third World. By 1975, with his program of “scientific socialism”, he had centralized the budget, nationalized land, and imposed wage and price controls. He conscientiously tried to ban khat, recognizing that it rotted the core of Somalia’s work force by creating young addicts who spent the morning hours scoring the amphetamine weed and the afternoon hours chewing it. The ban didn’t work—but Siad tried. Here are videos/articles about the late president and his achievements: Articles Videos

Meiji Posted August 17, 2009 As I said earlier, spreading propaganda from the website called ''jaallesiyaad''. Why else would Cumar refer to ''Jaallesiyaad''? That alone shows that it is a poor attempt by the Siyaadists to distort history. PS: The dark legacy of the dictator is well-documented, so a simple website can not change that dark legacy. Fabregas Posted August 17, 2009 I think we should gather all the research on this thread and put into a book.

To argue the late General was "pretending" and repented afterwards is a different thing all together. PS I've seen dozens of Masjids and Islamic schools built across London over the years. Does this means the PMs were Muslims, does it?
