BN Posted August 9, 2003 The excerpt below is from the Report on Internally Displaced Persons in Somalia by the UNCU in 2002. It discusses the situation of Internally Displaced People(IDP), in particular, and Somalia in general. The link and source is provided below. Self-reliance in the Northeast: Puntland (2002) "In comparison to Hargeisa, Bosasso residents enjoy a higher standard of living if we compare average daily incomes. While urban residents of Hargeisa earn, on average, about $1 a day, Bosasso residents earn over $4. Naturally, with respect to Bosasso, IDPs earnings are far lower. Most IDP households in Bosasso earn a daily wage of a little over a $1, which is more than 50percent, more than most returnee/IDP families living in and around Hargeisa. However, for Bosasso's IDPs these earnings are seasonally dependent." Therefore Bosaso and Puntland in general has a higher standard of living then Hargeisa and 'Somaliland'. We can also assuming that wages in towns like Galkacyo, Laascaanod, Erigavo, Garowe, Badhan, Qardho, Las Qoray are higher then those in the NW Somali towns. Yearly Income: Bosaso Resident Yearly wage: $4 X 6(days)X 4(weeks)X 12(Months)= $1152+ USD Hargeisa Resident Yearly Wage: $1 X 6(days)X 4(weeks)X 12(Months)= $288 USD Bosaso IDP wage: $1 X 6(days)X 4(weeks)X 12(Months)= $288 USD Hargeisa IDP Wage: $.50 X 6(days)X 4(weeks)X12(Months)=$144 USD http://www.db.idpproject.org/Sites/idpSurvey.nsf/wViewCountries/15B6C9955D815FAAC1256D440074B9CB Sources: United Nations Coordination Unit in Somalia (UNCU), 30 July 2002, UN Report on Internally Displaced Persons in Somalia. miles-militis Posted August 10, 2003 More on the city and its vibrant economy through the eyes of a son of the city touring the city after many years. Here is his observation of life in Bosaso - Boosaaso :Markaan tegay Boosaaso 28/07/2003 goor duhurnimo ah, waxaan noqday daandaan, kuleylkii iyo qoraxdii ayaa indhaha iga qabtay, halacbaa indhaha iga leefay …. Hoos ayaan u eegay magaalada, saaxiibo ayaan la kulmay horumar sameeyey dhinac waxbarasho iyo dhinac ganacsiba. Waxaan tegay hoteelo quruxsan iyo warshado wax soo saar oo iga danbeeyey. Hotellada aan tegay ugu horeyn waxaa ka mid ahaa hotel Panorama oo ah hotel cunto macaan fadhi wanaagsanna leh balse qaali ah. Waxaan tegay markii xigay Bender-qaasim Restaurant oo ah makhaayad weyn oo aad ka heleyso cuntada noocyadeeda oo dhan, waxa aan la yaabay cuntada laguu keenayo iyo qiimaha aad bixinaysid anigoo ka shakisan in uu maqal-hayuhu ii khaldamay ayaan irida ka baxay. Dabadeed waxaan tegay Hotel Karaama oo asna casri ah balse waxaa u dheeraa asaga in ay joogeen ugaartii duurka oo rabeysan ayna ka midyihiin deero, garanuug, sagaaro IWM, aadna taaban kartid lana ciyaari kartid ugaadhaas rabaysan ee qurxisa hotelka. Fadhiga bilicsan ka sokow hotel Karaama wuxuu leeyahay biyo cirka u boodaya oo quruxbadan kuna shumaya meel loogu talo galay sida mararbadan lagu arko wadamada horumaray. Xaga warshadaha waxaan arkay warshad samaysa cabitaanka laqasto oo noocyo badan ah sida liinta, cananaaska IWM. Warshado badan oo biyaha sameeya kana haqabtira dadka reer Boosaaso cabitaanka biyaha nadiifka ah. Xaga waxbarashada waxaan durbadiiba booqday Jaamacada Boosaaso lana yiraahdo Jaamacada Bariga Africa (East AFrican University).Jaamacadu hada way xirantahay oo fasax ayaa lagu jiraa balse markaan booqday waxaa jiray xaflad lagu gudoonsiinayey shahaadooyin arday wax ku baratay qaabka wax isudirida (Correspondence) oo markaas lagu qabanayey Jaamacada qolkeeda shirarka. Dhinaca iskuulada hoose, dhexe iyo sare aad ayey uga badan yihiin magalaada, waxaana moodaa inay sii kordhayaan in kastoo ay aad u badan yihiin dhalinta waxbarasha la'aanta ah ee wadooyinka Boosaaso aad ku arkeysid. Guud ahaan magaalada Boosaaso waa weyntahay waxayna u dhismaysaa si baaxad leh. Markii aan la kulmay shirkado dhowr ah oo qaabilsan dhismaha waxay ii sheegeen in hada xoog la saarayo wadooyinka magaalada iyo dhisida guryo u qaabeysan habka casrigaa ee dunida iyadoo wadooyinka muhiimadooda la siinayo si guri kastaa u helo wado loo soo maro. Xarumaha dowladda ee magaalada Boosaaso dhamaan way shaqeeyaan aad ayayna u camiran yihiin gaar ahaan xafiisyada dowlada hoose iyo kuwa gobolka oo aan booqday. Ciidanka amaanka magaalada shaqo fiican ayuu hayaa sida ii muuqatay. Waxaa layaableh intii aan Boosaaso joogay ma maqal sanqarta xabad ama dil ama dhac toona. waxaana la oran karaa Boosaaso maanta way ka nabad badan tahay magaalooyinka waaweyn ee aduunka sida London iyo NewYork. Shirkadaha telefoonada ee Golis iyo Netco ayaa xaga isgaarsiinta ka haqabtira dadka reer Boosaaso xag telefoon iyo xag Internetba. Xafiisyada kuwa dowlada iyo kuwa ganacsatadaba waxay ku qalabeysan yihiin computerada casrigaa iyo qalabka xafiisyada ee sare. Gabagabadii waxaa iiga muuqatay magaalada Boosaaso horumar saayid ah iyo rabitaan dadku rabo inay waxqabsadaan in kastoo ay jiraan duruufo dhaqaale iyo kuwa kale oo ay keentay shaqo la'aan ba'an oo jirta gaar ahaan dhalinyarada laga rabey inay shaqeeyaan. Rokko Posted August 11, 2003 Developement is going ahead as planned by the Puntland goverment. We need to diversify businesses to avoid unfair competitions na'mean. The Finance minister rejected this "ISKU-DAYASHO" system earlier. Each company should focus on a different business the community needs na'mean. Thanks Bari and Samurai. NinBrown Posted August 11, 2003 Thanks Bari and SW. This is proves the development Pland. Iam not much of an econimist but I agree with diversification of bussineses in Pland and self reliance...we shouls produce and manfucture as much as we can do. PLand should aim to become the industrial powehouse of Somalia.
BN Posted August 11, 2003 MB & NB, Thanks for your input. I completely agree. Diversification is the key to a stable economy. I think more focus should be on the manufactuering and processing sectors. So far there are only a few(that I know). Like the fish canning plants in Bosaso and Las Qoray, water bottling factories, and I think there's a milk processing plant in Garowe. Otherwise, we will always be at the mercy of Arab governments and bans on Somali animal exports. Another very important step is the finishing of the Bosaso port. The Italian government started the 3 phase development of Bosaso into a modern deep water port. But phase 2 and 3 of the project were not done due to the civil war. Today, Only Berbera, Mogadishu and Kismayo have deep water ports. For Bosaso to compete it must also. Also, the Frankincense business in Puntland should be better regulated and expanded. This is a quote from BuySomali.com Progressive Intervention Orginization: "In the absence of quality control systems for gum exports and direct access to international and Saudi Arabian markets, Somalis have become heavily dependant upon Gulf transshipment markets, especially the UAE. Somali merchants in the Gulf states are poorly positioned. Over just a few short recent years, demand and prices for Somali frankincense have plummeted as the international frankincense trade appears now to be heavily controlled by powerful merchant cartels. "Feedback from international buyers and essential oil distillers confirms a widespread practice of gum adulteration somewhere between Somalia and European ports. "Preferred Somali frankincense varieties are being mixed with inferior gum species which is being marketed as Arabian frankincense" says seasoned Somali trader, Mohamed Nur. "The problem for disillusioned Somali frankincense merchants and collectors is compounded when in some cases they never get paid by Gulf merchants, or in the case of payment from unscrupulous local merchants, get paid in useless local money or inflated food-for-work" he adds. All this has led to a crisis in the Somali frankincense sector for an estimated 10,000 collector households as well as the many women gum cleaners and graders whose livelihoods depend on frankincense. One significant environmental fallout from this is collectors turning to alternative incomes from tree felling for charcoal production, including young frankincense trees." Continue.... Lastly, the main Somalia road should be expanded to more remote regions to facilitate trade and development in the North East.
Ibtilo Posted August 12, 2003 Isnt it funny How people from Somalia have to belittle Somaliland inorder to feel special? Has anyone noticed this pattern?

wind talker Posted August 12, 2003 Man, that's great news that the residents of Boosaaso are living on $4 a day. WOW! Let's give 'em candy. Seriously though, there's two faults in you're analysis of the economies of two distinct cities. First and foremost, I don't believe a word the U.N. says. And secondly, if one Somali city is prospering, why bring another one down? What's the purpose? I love Boosaaso as its home to every one in my family, including myself, although I've never been there. But to compare it to Hargaysa is a childish way of compare-contrast that has deeper meanings, deeper, hostile meanings. I'm sure in a bit, LANDER, Gediid, and the rest are going to respond to you're B.S.@Bari. Sxb, to be honest, its people like you that are dragging Somalia down. Just be happy for everyone! BN Posted August 12, 2003 Originally posted by Haaruun: Bari_Nomad, is this the Joke of the month? Sxb, What's a joke is that residents in the "capital" and largest city in NW Somalia earn on average $1 a day. And residents in Bosaso--once a tiny town--earn four times as much and have a higher Quality of Life. I know it's embarrasing but look at the bright side...at least they make more then ppl in burco or berbera  Originally posted by WinD..TaLker..: Man, that's great news that the residents of Boosaaso are living on $4 a day. LOL. For Somalis back home--that is good news. Maybe you've been living our west toooo long Seriously though, there's two faults in you're analysis of the economies of two distinct cities. Enlighten Me... First and foremost, I don't believe a word the U.N. says. lol. Let me guess this involves a big conspiracy and aliens...right? I guess you get all your info spoon fed to you by the UDUB government in Hargeisa... And secondly, if one Somali city is prospering, why bring another one down? Just facts. But to compare it to Hargaysa is a childish way of compare-contrast. Your not making sense. But it's a pretty bad comparison for Hargeisans-I agree. I'm sure in a bit, LANDER, Gediid, and the rest are going to respond to you're B.S.@Bari. My BS? You mean the UN Report? The NW ppl can't say sh!t because they can't disprove it.
