There's not enough time to switch suppliers and some EU countries are more dependent on Russian gas than others. Equally important, Russia has large deposits of essential minerals including rare earth minerals that are essential for some important industries such as aeronautics, renewables, medicine, nuclear, etc. The more the war drags on, the harder it will become to contain Russia.
