Hargeisa (PP News Desk) — Barkhad Batun, an MP, today expressed dismay over spate of intimidations against MPs in Hargeisa. “It is sad that unidentified gunmen kidnap and keep people in detention before releasing them. Those acting unlawfully in such a manner are enemies of Somaliland” Barkhad told MPs at a session in Hargeisa.

The Waddani Party MP said that several MPs had had their way blocked off by cars in a clear sign to intimidate them. Failure to deal with this problem could bring back early 1990s insecurity. How can an MP being subjected to intimidation serve people? ” Barkhad added.

Barkhad attributed causes of basic rights violations to the Somaliland Penal Law. “We blame the government, the police force and courts for violations resulting from the application of Somaliland Penal Code. It is too stuffy to deal with civil, business and state cases. It cannot keep pace with the changes of the 21st century” Barkhad added.

“Will [Somaliland] president summon the courage to answer MPs’ questions, giving them the opportunity to question his record of human rights, justice, and democracy? A confident president who is proud of his record would not avoid questions because avoiding questions is a sign of failure” tweeted Khadar Hussein Abdi, the Secretary General of Waddani.
